Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The corporate headquarters of the Montgomery Group was a towering monolith of glass and steel that dominated the city’s financial district. The top floor was home to the grand boardroom—a massive room with panoramic views of the skyline and a table carved from a single piece of ancient black walnut.

Victoria and Julian Sterling sat on one side of the table, looking incredibly small against the backdrop of the massive room. Victoria had tried to maintain her regal appearance, wearing a sharp grey business suit and her signature pearls, but the dark circles under her eyes and the slight tremor in her hands betrayed her terror. Julian sat beside her, sweating profusely, his eyes darting toward the door every second.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Maya walked into the room, flanked by Colonel Vance, Elena, and a team of six high-powered attorneys. She looked unrecognizable. She wore a tailored, midnight-black power suit that accentuated her long, elegant frame. Her hair was pulled back into a flawless, professional updo, and her grey eyes burned with an icy, undeniable authority. She carried herself not as a victim, but as a sovereign queen returning to her throne.

She took her seat at the head of the table, looking down at the Sterlings with a cool, detached expression.

"Maya..." Julian started, his voice filled with a pathetic, desperate longing. He leaned forward, trying to catch her eye. "Thank God you came. Look, about the gala... it was all a massive misunderstanding. My mother was stressed about the merger, and—"

Maya did not even look at him. She raised a single, elegant hand, and Julian’s voice died in his throat.

"My name is Katherine Montgomery," Maya said, her voice smooth and cold as marble. "The woman you called 'Maya' died on the floor of your banquet hall when you chose your fortune over her dignity. You will address me by my proper title, or this meeting terminates immediately."

Victoria’s jaw clenched so hard her teeth clicked. She swallowed her immense pride, her voice shaking as she spoke. "Lady Katherine... we are here to discuss the renewal of the logistics covenant. It is a mutually beneficial agreement. Surely, you wouldn't let personal... grievances interfere with sound business practices."

Maya let out a soft, melodic laugh that sent a shiver down Julian's spine.

"Sound business practices?" Maya asked, leaning back in her leather chair. "Let’s look at your sound business practices, Victoria. Over the past three years, you have systematically used your shell companies to siphon funds from the charity organizations I volunteered for. You have blacklisted two of my closest friends from their jobs simply because they attended my low-key wedding. And let’s not forget the physical assault forty-eight hours ago."

Elena stepped forward, placing a tablet on the table and sliding it toward Victoria.

"This is a formal filing from the district attorney’s office," Elena announced. "Lady Katherine has officially pressed charges for felony assault and battery against Victoria Sterling. The video evidence has been verified, and the warrant will be served by the end of the business day."

Victoria’s face drained of color. "You... you dare try to put me in prison?"

"I don't have to try, Victoria. You put yourself there the moment you raised your hand against a Montgomery," Maya said calmly.

Julian scrambled forward, his hands pressing against the polished wood of the table. "Maya—sorry, Lady Katherine! Please! If my mother goes to jail, the merger fails completely! We will be ruined! I am the father of your child! Think of Lily! You can't do this to her family!"

Maya’s eyes finally locked onto Julian, and the sheer, freezing contempt in her gaze made him flinch.

"Do not dare use my daughter as a shield for your cowardice," Maya whispered, her voice laced with a lethal intensity. "When Victoria called me a worthless orphan, you said nothing. When she struck me, you looked at the floor. You are not a father, Julian. You are a parasite who was willing to let his child grow up believing her mother was trash, just to protect your trust fund."

She slid a document across the table. It was a set of divorce papers, coupled with a total surrender of parental rights.

"Sign this," Maya commanded. "You will relinquish all claims to my daughter. You will walk out of her life forever. In exchange, I will allow the logistics covenant to run for another thirty days—giving you just enough time to liquidate your personal assets and avoid total, immediate bankruptcy. Refuse, and I freeze your lines today, and your family will be living in a shelter by next week."

Julian looked at the papers, his hand shaking violently as he picked up the pen. He looked at his mother, who was staring into space, her eyes empty as she realized her reign of terror had come to a violent, humiliating end. With a heavy sob, Julian signed the papers, sealing his own exile from the world of the elite.
