Chapter 6 - A Public Reckoning

While Ethan and Lily were finding peace at the cemetery, a digital wildfire was consuming the corporate reputation of the Grand Regent Chicago.

A high-profile guest—an influential investigative journalist and media executive named Marcus Vance (no relation to Ethan)—had been checking into the hotel late the previous night to attend the corporate gala. He had been standing near the concierge desk when the entire confrontation between Ethan, Patricia, and Lupita took place. Recognizing the potential impact of the scene, Marcus had quietly recorded a two-minute video of the incident on his smartphone.

By 2:00 PM, the video had been uploaded to major social media platforms with the headline: “Billionaire Owner of Vance Hospitality Denied Entry at His Own Flagship Property While Holding Sleeping Daughter – The Hostile Reality of Corporate Hospitality.”

The video was staggering in its clarity. It captured Patricia’s condescending smirk, Karla’s arrogant eye-rolls, and the heartbreaking image of the exhausted, widowed father holding his sleeping child while being directed to a highway motel. It also captured Lupita's brave, quiet intervention.

Within four hours, the video had accumulated over ten million views, thousands of angry comments, and mainstream news outlets were picking up the story. The Vance Hospitality Group’s stock price began to dip as public outrage grew, with citizens calling for a global boycott of the luxury brand.

Ethan was sitting in the executive penthouse, reading a storybook to Lily, when his personal tablet began vibrating incessantly with high-priority alerts from the corporate public relations department in New York. The head of media relations, Cynthia Vance-Croft, was on the line, her voice dripping with sheer panic.

"Ethan! Thank God you're answering," Cynthia gasped. "The internet is exploding. The footage of the front desk incident from last night has gone completely viral. The media is painting the entire brand as an elitist, discriminatory empire. The board is demanding an immediate emergency press conference. We need to release a statement denying the severity of the incident or claim the video was edited."

Ethan listened in silence, his expression hardening into a mask of pure steel. He looked over at Lily, who was happily coloring on the rug, completely insulated from the corporate chaos.

"We will do no such thing, Cynthia," Ethan said, his voice chillingly calm.

"What? Ethan, if we don't control the narrative, the financial damage to the flagship property will be catastrophic—"

"The narrative is accurate, Cynthia," Ethan interrupted. "My staff behaved abominably. They treated a tired father and a child like garbage based on their appearance. I will not spin a web of lies to protect a corporate image that was built on a flawed culture."

He stood up, walking over to the desk. "Call a live press conference in the main lobby of the Grand Regent Chicago at exactly 6:00 PM tonight. Ensure every local and national news outlet is present. Do not draft a corporate script for me. I will speak the truth myself."

"Ethan... are you sure about this?" Cynthia whispered, terrified of what an unscripted billionaire might say to a hostile press pool.

"I have never been more sure of anything in my life," Ethan said flatly, ending the call.
