Chapter 4 - An Unexpected Elevation

The service elevator at the back of the kitchen corridor was loud and metallic, a stark contrast to the velvet-lined guest elevators in the main lobby. Lupita adjusted the heavy stack of linen in her arms, her uniform smelling faintly of bleach and detergent. Her mind was entirely consumed by the rumors flying through the hotel’s underbelly. Word had spread like wildfire that the quiet father from the night before was actually Ethan Vance, the reclusive multi-billionaire owner of the entire global brand.
"Lupita!" a sharp voice called out.
She turned to see the executive executive floor supervisor running toward her, looking out of breath. "Drop the linens, Lupita. The Chairman wants you in the top-floor executive boardroom immediately."
Lupita felt a sudden spike of anxiety in her chest. Had she violated protocol by speaking out at the front desk last night? Had her defense of the mysterious traveler cost her the only job that allowed her to send money back to her elderly mother in Guadalajara? She carefully set the towels down on a metal cart, smoothed her apron, and walked toward the executive elevator, her heart hammering against her ribs.
When she stepped into the massive boardroom, the scale of the room instantly intimidated her. The mahogany table, the expensive suits, and the powerful men sitting in silence made her feel incredibly small. But then her eyes landed on Ethan, who was sitting next to Lily. The little girl looked up from her drawing and gave Lupita a bright, innocent smile.
"Come in, Lupita. Please, take a seat," Ethan said gently, gesturing to the empty leather chair directly opposite him.
Lupita walked forward with hesitant steps, carefully sitting on the very edge of the plush chair. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. I... I apologize if my actions last night caused any disruption to the front desk operations."
Ethan looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable, before a soft, genuine smile appeared on his face. "Lupita, last night you looked at two of your superiors and told them that watching a tired father hold his sleeping little girl without anyone making an effort to help was a concern to you. Do you remember saying that?"
Lupita swallowed hard but kept her head high, her gaze steady. "I do, sir. And I meant it. Protocol should never override basic human kindness."
Ethan leaned forward, slamming his hand lightly on the table, causing Julian to flinch. "Exactly. You are the only person in that lobby last night who actually understood what Vance Hospitality stands for. You didn't care about corporate metrics or high-profile galas. You saw a human being in need, and you risked your own job to do the right thing."
He turned to Arthur Pendelton. "Arthur, what is the current salary for a flagship front office guest relations manager?"
"One hundred and twenty thousand annually, sir, plus executive performance bonuses and full family medical coverage," Arthur answered promptly.
Ethan turned back to Lupita. "As of this moment, Lupita, you are the new Director of Guest Relations and Front Office Culture for the Grand Regent Chicago. You will have complete authority over the hiring, training, and cultural implementation of every front-facing employee in this building. Your primary mandate is to ensure that no traveler, regardless of their appearance, is ever treated with anything less than absolute respect and dignity."
Lupita stared at the billionaire, her breath completely catching in her throat. Her hands began to tremble, tears of overwhelming shock rising in her dark eyes. "Mr. Vance... I... I don't know what to say. I don't have a degree in corporate hospitality. I have only worked in housekeeping."
"I don't need a degree, Lupita. I can buy degrees by the dozen," Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "I need a heart. I need someone who remembers what it feels like to be tired, stressed, and looking for a safe place to rest. You have that heart. The position is yours if you accept it."
Lupita looked across the table at Lily, who was holding up her drawing—a picture of a big yellow house with a smiling sun overhead. A deep, profound sense of gratitude washed over her. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek and nodded firmly.

"I accept, Mr. Vance," she said, her voice steadying. "I will not let you down."
"I know you won't," Ethan smiled. "Now, please take the rest of the day off with full pay. Spend time with your family. Your new office will be ready tomorrow morning."
