Chapter 2 - The Penthouse Sanctuary

The private elevator ride up to the 9th floor was completely silent. Julian had insisted on accompanying Ethan, carrying the faded backpack with an awkward reverence, treating the old canvas bag as if it were made of solid gold. Ethan kept his arms wrapped securely around Lily, his chin resting gently against her soft hair. The elevator doors chimed softly as they opened directly into the foyer of Suite 904—a massive, elegantly appointed penthouse that spanned the entire eastern wing of the building.

The suite was breathtaking, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, the distant city lights glittering like scattered diamonds against the dark backdrop of Lake Michigan. Lupita had already executed Ethan's orders perfectly. A soft, golden warmth filled the space, the scent of fresh lavender oil drifting from the master bathroom, and a tray of fresh fruit, artisanal bread, and a steaming pot of chamomile tea sat on the reclaimed wood coffee table.

"Leave the bag by the door, Julian," Ethan whispered, his eyes never leaving Lily’s face.

"Of course, Mr. Vance," Julian murmured, carefully setting the backpack down. "I have already suspended Patricia and Karla pending a full corporate review first thing in the morning. I will personally oversee the investigation into their conduct."

Ethan carried Lily across the plush velvet carpeting toward the secondary bedroom, which had been permanently prepared for her with a collection of her favorite children's books and a beautifully carved oak bedframe. "Suspension is a temporary solution to a permanent problem, Julian. We will discuss the restructuring of the staff tomorrow at eight o'clock sharp in the executive boardroom. Goodnight."

Julian recognized the absolute finality in Ethan’s tone. He bowed his head respectfully and quietly retreated, the heavy oak doors closing softly behind him, leaving the billionaire father alone with his daughter.

Ethan gently lowered Lily onto the crisp, white Egyptian cotton sheets. She stirred slightly, her small brow furrowing as she reached out blindly into the space around her. Ethan immediately reached into the side pocket of his leather jacket and pulled out a worn, slightly tattered stuffed rabbit with one floppy ear. The moment Lily’s fingers brushed against the familiar plush fabric, her expression relaxed, her small hand curling tightly around the toy as she let out a soft, contented sigh and sank deeper into the mattress.

Ethan stood by the bedside for a long time, his hand gently stroking her forehead, brushing away a stray lock of blonde hair. The quiet room was a stark contrast to the chaotic noise of the airport and the hostile confrontation in the lobby.

"You're safe now, baby," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly with the raw emotion he had spent the last several hours suppressing. "Daddy's got you. No one is ever going to treat you like you don't belong."

Walking back into the main living room, Ethan picked up the bouquet of red roses from the foyer table. He walked over to the wide kitchen island, found a crystal vase in one of the high cabinets, and filled it with cool water. One by one, he carefully trimmed the stems of the battered roses, his fingers moving with practiced precision.

Tomorrow would mark exactly three years since Sarah had lost her battle with a sudden, aggressive illness. She had been the anchor of his life, the woman who had stood beside him in a cramped, drafty studio apartment when he was working three jobs just to buy his first commercial property. She didn't care about the millions he eventually made; she only cared about the kindness he kept in his heart.

Ethan set the vase of roses in the center of the dining table, the deep red petals reflecting against the dark glass surface. He sat down on the leather sofa, pulling a small, leather-bound notebook from his jacket pocket. It was filled with blueprints, personal observations, and notes on employee performance across his various properties. He opened to a fresh page, his pen hovering over the paper as the weight of his reality settled heavily on his shoulders.

The corporate gala downstairs was still roaring, the distant, rhythmic bass of a live orchestra vibrating faintly through the concrete floors of the building. To the wealthy elites dancing below, Ethan Vance was a ghost—a legendary figure who controlled a vast real estate empire but rarely showed his face. But to Ethan, the empire was merely a tool to ensure that Lily would always have a secure future. Yet, tonight's incident had proven that the very empire he built was capable of generating the kind of cruelty he despised most. He closed the notebook, his eyes hardening. The battle for the soul of the Grand Regent would begin at dawn.
