Chapter 2: The Ghost Protocol

Chapter 2: The Ghost Protocol

Twenty-four hours after the gala, the world was in a state of shock. The media dubbed the event "The Night of Retribution." News channels looped the audio confession of the syndicate admitting to the arson that killed Eleanor’s father twenty years ago. Yet, Eleanor couldn't celebrate.

Inside the fortified penthouse that served as her command center, the atmosphere was tense. Computer screens lined the walls, tracking flight paths, bank transactions, and global facial recognition databases. Arthur Sterling typed furiously at the main console, his brow furrowed in frustration.

"Victor didn't just run; he activated a 'Ghost Protocol,'" Arthur explained, turning to Eleanor. "He’s using a network of dark-web mercenaries known as The Obsidian Network. They don't care about the law, and they don't care about corporate stocks. They deal in liquid assets, black-market weapons, and targeted assassinations."

"He's trying to burn everything down on his way out," Eleanor whispered, looking at a map of the city’s critical infrastructure.

Suddenly, every screen in the room glitched, replaced by a single video feed. It was Victor Vance. He was sitting in a dimly lit, industrial bunker, his tie loosened, a sinister, unhinged smile on his face.

"Hello, Eleanor. Dear niece," Victor sneered into the camera. "You thought you won because you embarrassed us on television? You played the corporate game, but you forgot that I built the playground. If I cannot have the Vance legacy, no one will. I have initiated a malware payload into the city's power grid and water filtration systems. In twelve hours, the city will plunge into darkness. The riots will wipe out whatever evidence the feds think they have. Stop looking for me, or I’ll press the detonate button early."

The screen went black.

Arthur’s team immediately tried to trace the signal, but it was heavily encrypted through a dozen proxy servers across the globe. The drama shifted from a battle for a corporate crown to a race against time to save millions of innocent lives. The syndicate’s final act of desperation was a scorched-earth policy.
