Chapter 1: The Ash and the Aftermath

Chapter 1: The Ash and the Aftermath
The silence that followed the broadcast was heavier than the centuries of lies that preceded it. Inside the Grand Ballroom of the Horizon Plaza, the air tasted of ozone and expensive champagne gone sour. The global press was already live-streaming the panicked, tear-streaked faces of the city’s untouchable elite.
Eleanor Vance—the young heiress who had just shattered a multi-billion-dollar empire with a flash of her titanium signet ring—stood perfectly still. Her eyes, cool and unforgiving, locked onto the remaining board members. They were cornered like rats in tuxedos and silk gowns.
"This is illegal! You have no authority to hold us here!" screamed Julian Cross, the syndicate’s chief financial officer, his face turning a sickly shade of purple. He lunged toward the grand exit, only to be met by a wall of tactical officers clad in matte-black armor. They didn't move an inch. Their presence was absolute.
Arthur Sterling stepped forward from the shadows, the digital jammer in his hand humming softly. His cold, triumphant expression softened only when he looked at Eleanor. "The authority, Julian, belongs to the federal warrants currently being executed at your private residences," Arthur said, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "As we speak, every offshore account, every hidden ledger, and every piece of property bought with the blood of Eleanor's father is being seized."
Chaos erupted on a global scale. Outside the glass facade of the plaza, the red and blue flashing lights of federal vehicles painted the night sky. The syndicate’s stock ticker, displayed on the giant screens overlooking Times Square, was a bloodbath of plunging red arrows. In less than ten minutes, ninety billion dollars of corporate tyranny had been erased.
But as the officers began cuffing the board members, Eleanor noticed a glaring absence. The mastermind behind her father's assassination—the current CEO, Victor Vance, her own uncle—was nowhere to be seen. A cold dread washed over her.
She pressed a hidden button on her ring, opening a secure line to her tactical lead. "Where is Victor?"

The response through her earpiece was fractured by static. "Ma'am, we have a breach in the subterranean garage. A black SUV just broke through the perimeter. He’s running."
Eleanor’s grip tightened on her ring until her knuckles turned white. The war wasn't over. The snake had been decapitated, but its venomous head was still at large, and a cornered monster is always the most dangerous.
