Chapter 5 - The Climax at the Yacht Club

The venue for the annual New York Maritime Gala was the exclusive Manhattan Yacht Club, overlooking the Hudson River. The event was the biggest gathering of logistics and shipping magnates in the country.
Adrien Vale had managed to secure an invitation, hoping to use the event to salvage his reputation and find a new investor to bail him out. He arrived with Camille on his arm, both of them putting on a brave face despite the whispering crowds. Camille wore a heavy layers of makeup to hide the strain on her face, and her wrists were bare.
As they walked into the main ballroom, the hum of conversation suddenly died down.
Vanessa had arrived.
She wore a stunning, backless emerald green silk gown that draped perfectly over her figure. Her hair was styled in elegant waves, and around her wrist, catching the light of the chandeliers, was her mother's diamond bracelet.
She wasn't alone. Julian Sterling walked beside her, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back. They looked powerful, elegant, and completely in control.
Adrien’s eyes turned red with fury. He broke away from Camille and marched straight toward them, intercepting them near the balcony overlooking the river.
"Vanessa!" Adrien hissed, his voice trembling with a mix of desperation and rage. "You think you’ve won? You think you can just replace me with Sterling?"
"I didn't replace you, Adrien," Vanessa said, looking at him with pity. "I upgraded."
"You ruined my company!" Adrien yelled, drawing the attention of the nearby guests. "You stole the software! You sabotaged my contracts!"
"I took back what was mine," Vanessa replied calmly. "You never owned that software, Adrien. Just like you never owned me."
Camille rushed up behind Adrien, her face contorted with anger. "You think you're so smart, Vanessa? My agency is going to run a story tomorrow that will destroy your reputation forever. You’ll be known as a bitter, vindictive thief!"
Julian stepped forward, shielding Vanessa with his frame. "I wouldn't count on that, Ms. Rosier."
"And why is that, Sterling?" Camille sneered.
"Because fifteen minutes ago, the FBI raided your agency's headquarters," Julian said, pulling out his phone and showing her a live news broadcast. "They are currently executing a search warrant for tax fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement. And the warrant includes Adrien Vale’s personal and professional accounts."
Adrien’s jaw dropped. He stared at the screen, his face turning an ashen grey. "No... no, that's impossible. How did they—"
"I gave them the keys, Adrien," Vanessa said, her voice cold and unyielding. "I knew about the offshore accounts. I found the transaction records weeks ago. I was waiting for the right moment to use them."
Just then, three men in dark suits walked into the yacht club ballroom, escorted by the club’s security. They walked directly toward Adrien and Camille.
"Adrien Vale? Camille Rosier?" the lead agent asked, producing a badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, tax evasion, and corporate fraud. Please come with us."
The ballroom erupted into chaos as the agents handcuffed Adrien and Camille in front of the entire elite of New York business society.

As Adrien was being led away, he looked back at Vanessa, his eyes wide with terror and regret. "Vanessa! Please! Help me! You know me... seven years, Vanessa! Please!"
Vanessa stood tall, her hand sliding into Julian’s. She didn't say a word. She watched as the man who had dismissed her, humiliated her, and used her was dragged out of the room in disgrace.
