Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

The transition to Sterling Global was a whirlwind for Vanessa. For the first time in her career, she had a budget that didn't require penny-pinching, a team of fifty top-tier developers, and a CEO who actually listened to her ideas instead of claiming them as his own.
But Adrien wasn't going down quietly.
A week after the ballroom incident, a series of smear articles began appearing in online tabloids. The headlines were vicious:
“Did Vanessa Hart Steal Vale Logistics’ Proprietary Tech Before Walking Out?” “The Bitter Ex: How Vanessa Hart is Sabotaging Her Former Fiancé’s Business out of Spite.”
Vanessa sat in her new office, looking at the screen, her heart sinking. She knew Camille Rosier’s PR agency was behind this. Camille was trying to shift the public narrative from her own infidelity and theft to Vanessa’s alleged corporate sabotage.
"Don't let them get to you," Julian said, entering her office. He placed a folder on her desk—this one filled with financial documents.
"It's hard not to," Vanessa said, sighing. "They're trying to ruin my professional reputation. If the industry believes I'm vindictive and untrustworthy, Sterling Global’s clients will hesitate to work with me."
"Then we change the narrative," Julian said. "We don't play defense, Vanessa. We play offense. Camille Rosier’s PR firm is heavily funded by Vale Logistics. But did you know that Camille’s agency has been hiding a massive tax evasion scheme for the past three years?"
Vanessa looked up, her eyes widening. "What?"
"I had my forensic accountants look into Camille's agency's books. They’ve been funneling money from Vale Logistics into offshore accounts, pretending they were 'consulting fees' to avoid corporate taxes," Julian explained. "And the person who signed off on those payments? Adrien Vale."
"He was laundering money for her," Vanessa whispered, the pieces suddenly falling into place. "That's why he kept her around. It wasn't just an affair. They were partners in crime."
"Exactly," Julian said, a cold, satisfied smile on his face. "And we have the receipts. We’re going to hold a live press conference tomorrow morning. We will launch your new, upgraded routing platform—Sterling Flow—and at the exact same time, we will hand these documents over to the federal authorities."
Vanessa looked at Julian. He was offering her the ultimate weapon. But more than that, she saw the way he looked at her—not as a tool, not as a possession, but as an equal.
"Julian," she said softly, stepping closer to him. "Why are you helping me this much? It's more than just business, isn't it?"
Julian looked down at her, his gaze intense and sincere. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. "For three years, I watched you work yourself to the bone for a man who didn't deserve you. I saw your brilliance, your grace, and your strength. I hated him for not seeing what he had. I promised myself that if I ever got the chance to stand by your side, I would never let you feel undervalued again."
Vanessa’s heart raced. The warmth of his hand against her skin was a sharp contrast to the coldness she had felt for seven years. She leaned into his touch.

"Thank you, Julian," she whispered.
"We win this first," Julian said, his thumb gently tracing her cheekbone. "Then, we build our own future."
