Chapter 3 - The Desperate Move

By the next morning, the business world was in chaos. Social media was flooded with video clips of Vanessa’s dramatic exit from the Lucent Crown ballroom. The hashtag #VanessaHart had gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, with millions of users cheering her on for reclaiming her mother's jewelry and leaving her cheating fiancé stranded at his own rehearsal dinner.
Inside the glass-walled offices of Vale Logistics, Adrien was pacing like a caged beast.
"What do you mean we can't bypass the encryption?" Adrien roared at his head of IT, a young, nervous man named Toby.
"Sir, the core algorithm is hosted on a private server owned by Hart Tech Holdings," Toby explained, sweating profusely. "We only had a local client-side API license. Vanessa revoked the security certificates at midnight. If we try to force our way in, the entire database will self-destruct. It’s a hard-coded fail-safe."
"Then fix it!" Adrien slammed his fist onto the conference table.
"We can't, Adrien," Marcus Vance said, entering the room with a grim expression. The venture capitalist looked exhausted. "The board is calling an emergency meeting in two hours. Our biggest client, OmniCorp, has already threatened to cancel their contract if their morning shipments are delayed. We are facing a forty-million-dollar deficit by the end of the week."
"Where is Camille?" Adrien snapped, looking around the empty room.
"Camille is currently dealing with a PR nightmare," Marcus said dryly. "The video of Vanessa taking that bracelet off her wrist has been viewed twenty million times. Sponsors are dropping her. She's radioactive right now, Adrien. And so are you."
Adrien grabbed his coat, his eyes burning with a desperate, toxic rage. "I’m going to see her. She’s hiding out at her apartment. She thinks she can ruin me? I made her. I’ll remind her who she is without me."
Ten minutes later, Adrien’s sports car roared out of the parking garage, heading toward Vanessa’s apartment in Tribeca.
When he arrived, he bypassed the doorman by using his old key fob, which Vanessa hadn't deactivated yet. He marched up to the penthouse door and pounded on it violently.
"Vanessa! Open the door! We need to talk!"
The door opened, but it wasn't Vanessa who stood on the other side.
It was Julian Sterling. He was wearing a casual, dark cashmere sweater, holding a cup of black coffee. He looked entirely at home in Vanessa's space.
Adrien’s blood boiled. "What the hell are you doing here, Sterling? Get out of my fiancée's apartment."
"She’s not your fiancée anymore, Vale," Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. "And this is no longer her apartment. She sold her share of the lease to me this morning. She's moved out."
"You... you bought her out?" Adrien stammered, stepping back. "Where is she?"
"She’s currently at the offices of Sterling Global, signing her new contract as our Executive Vice President of Global Logistics," Julian said, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "And as for your legal threats, my lawyers have already filed a countersuit against you for intellectual property theft, corporate harassment, and the unlawful conversion of personal property—specifically, Vanessa’s mother’s bracelet."

Adrien stepped forward, his fists clenching. "You think you can just take her from me? She loved me for seven years! She’ll come back! She has nothing without the life we built!"
"She built that life, Adrien. You just lived in it," Julian said. His eyes grew cold, devoid of any warmth. "If you ever come near her again, I will personally buy out your debt and foreclose on your house. Now, get off my property."
