Chapter 5: A New Seating Chart

Chapter 5: A New Seating Chart

One year later.

The air at the Port of Milwaukee was crisp, but the sun was shining brightly over Lake Michigan. I wasn't wearing a heavy winter coat anymore; I was wearing a tailored, emerald-green silk dress.

I stood on the deck of a chartered yacht, listening to the gentle lapping of the water against the hull. The smell of fresh lilies, grilled seafood, and expensive champagne filled the air.

"Everything is set, Captain Sam," a warm voice said from behind me.

I turned around to see David, my partner, holding two glasses of champagne. He smiled—an authentic, warm, and unapologetic smile that made my chest tighten with happiness. We had met six months ago when he helped audit the remaining assets of my father's old company, and we had been inseparable ever since. Today was the grand opening of my own independent logistics consulting firm.

Looking around the deck, I saw the people who truly mattered. Uncle Mark was laughing near the bar. Aunt Denise was chatting happily with Lauren. There were no corporate logos, no fake invoices, and no warnings dressed up as manners.

David guided me toward the dining area of the yacht. In the center stood a beautifully crafted wooden board with the seating arrangements for the celebratory dinner.

I walked up to it and ran my fingers over the cream paper. Right at the very center, at the main table overlooking the beautiful Milwaukee shoreline, my name was printed in elegant gold ink.

Samantha Reid — Guest of Honor.

David leaned close, his lips brushing against my ear as he whispered, "Your seat is right next to mine. And nobody is ever going to take it away."

I smiled, took a sip of my champagne, and looked out over the sparkling water. I had lost a family of thieves, but I had gained my freedom, my dignity, and a table of my own making. And at this table, there was always room for the truth.
