Chapter 1: The Parking Lot Confrontation

Tyler hurried over then, lowering his voice like a politician trying to clear a scandal before the cameras caught it. "Sam, please. You're ruining my wedding. Clare’s family is watching. Do you have any idea how bad this looks?"

"It looks exactly like what it is, Tyler," I said, my voice steady, carrying clearly across the suddenly silent foyer. "An $8,000 fraud."

My mother gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace as if it could shield her from the truth. Behind them, I saw Clare’s father—a prominent local banker whose name carried real weight in the city—step out of the ballroom, his brow furrowed as he looked toward the commotion.

"Shut your mouth, Samantha," my father growled, stepping into my personal space. The scent of bourbon was suffocating. "You have no idea what's at stake here. Put the envelope back on the table, sit in the lounge like a good daughter, and we will sort this out tomorrow."

"There is no tomorrow for this family, Dad," I said. I tucked the cream envelope into my purse and zipped it shut with a definitive, metallic snap. "And I am done being a 'good daughter' to a pack of thieves."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the heavy glass doors of the hotel.

"Sam! Wait!" Tyler called out, his footsteps echoing right behind me.

The humid evening air hit my face as I stepped out into the driveway. The valet looked startled, immediately stepping back. Tyler caught up to me by the fountain, his white dinner jacket looking ridiculous under the harsh parking lot lights.

"Sam, you don't understand," he pleaded, his voice cracking. "Dad’s company is drowning. If we didn't get that temporary liquidity, the catering business would have collapsed before the wedding. Clare’s family... they value legacy. If they knew Dad was bankrupt, the wedding would have been off!"

"So you lied to me. You forged a venue invoice. You stole from Lauren, from Uncle Mark, from Aunt Denise," I said, turning to face him. "And then you planned to ambush me tonight to co-sign a fraudulent business loan? 'She'll sign if everyone presses together'—that was the plan, right?"

Tyler’s face went entirely blank. The color drained from his lips. "How... how do you know about that?"

"Because unlike you, I actually look at the documents before I sign my life away," I said, unlocking my car. "Have a nice reception, Tyler. Enjoy the dinner seat you stole from me."
