Chapter 4: The Fall of the House of Reid

The collapse was spectacular. Once the Sterling family pulled their financial backing and social status, the house of cards fell instantly.

Within two weeks, Reid Signature Events filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The local news ran segments on the "Luxury Wedding Fraud," using screenshots of the viral social media posts to piece together the timeline. Vendors who had been stiffed for months came forward, filing a class-action lawsuit.

My father and Tyler were arrested and charged with identity theft, bank fraud, and grand larceny.

My mother tried one last time to appeal to me. She came to my apartment, looking older, her expensive clothes replaced by plain sweatpants.

"You destroyed us, Samantha," she whispered at my doorway. "Your brother's life is ruined. Your father is facing years in prison. All because you couldn't just let things go. Family is supposed to stick together."

"Family isn't a parasite, Mom," I replied, standing firmly in the doorway, not inviting her in. "You didn't want a family. You wanted a financial cushion that wouldn't talk back. You told me family shows up when it matters. Well, I showed up to hand the truth over to the law. That's where it matters most."

I closed the door on her. I didn't feel sad. I didn't feel guilty. For the first time in thirty-two years, I felt entirely, beautifully light.

I took the $8,000 check that was still sitting in my purse, drove to the bank, and deposited it back into my own savings account. Then, I helped Uncle Mark, Aunt Denise, and Lauren secure legal representation to get their stolen money prioritized during the liquidation of my father's business assets. They didn't blame me; they thanked me for waking them up.
