Chapter 6 - Blood Is Given, Family Is Earned

One year later...

The auditorium lights dimmed.

Rows of parents applauded as students prepared for the annual music recital.

Backstage...

Iris adjusted her cello.

She looked through the curtain.

"There."

Vera smiled.

"He came."

Front row.

Seat three.

Nico Ferrante.

No bodyguards.

No armored convoy.

No phone.

Just a father holding a bouquet far too large for a fourteen-year-old girl.

When Iris walked onto the stage...

She saw him immediately.

He wasn't watching the audience.

Wasn't watching exits.

Wasn't calculating threats.

He was simply watching her.

For the first time in his life...

The most feared man in Chicago looked completely unafraid.

After the performance, Iris ran into the lobby.

She stopped in front of him.

"Well?"

Nico smiled.

"I've negotiated billion-dollar contracts."

"I've survived assassination attempts."

"I've testified without speaking."

"But..."

He laughed softly.

"I've never been as nervous as I was during your solo."

She rolled her eyes.

"You cried."

"I absolutely did."

"You promised not to."

"I lied."

Vera joined them, shaking her head with amused disbelief.

Iris looked from one parent to the other.

Then quietly reached for both their hands.

Years earlier...

At 2:22 in the morning...

A stranger had rolled up his sleeve because a dying girl needed blood.

He believed he was saving someone else's child.

Instead...

He had unknowingly given life to the daughter he had mourned before she was ever born.

The DNA report proved biology.

The transfusion created the first connection.

But neither of those made him a father.

That happened afterward—

through homework at the kitchen table...

through awkward conversations...

through missed business opportunities and never-missed birthdays...

through every promise finally kept.

Empires can be inherited.

Fortunes can be rebuilt.

Power can change hands.

But family is different.

It is not written by laboratories.

It is not guaranteed by blood.

It is earned, day after ordinary day, by choosing the people you once almost lost.

And every year, when Iris celebrated the anniversary of the night that almost ended her life, Nico quietly donated blood at St. Carmel Medical Center.

He always requested anonymity.

May you like

Because he never forgot that the greatest thing he had ever given his daughter was not his name.

It was the chance for both of them to begin again.
