Chapter 1 - The Name He Buried Fourteen Years Ago

The room became so quiet that even the heart monitor seemed too loud.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Iris looked from the stranger with the bandage on his arm to her mother standing like a shield between them.
She had always believed adults became silent because they were angry.
This silence felt different.
It felt afraid.
"Mom?"
Vera never took her eyes off Nico.
"You should go."
"I donated blood to save her."
"And for that I'll spend the rest of my life grateful."
Her voice trembled only once.
"But gratitude doesn't erase fourteen years."
Nico swallowed.
"I never knew she existed."
"You knew enough to disappear."
Cass stepped forward.
"Mr. Ferrante—"
Nico raised a hand without looking back.
"No."
His gray eyes never left Vera.
"When I walked away, I believed I was protecting you."
"You don't get to rewrite history."
"I received medical confirmation that I couldn't have children."
Vera laughed once.
It wasn't amusement.
It sounded like something breaking.
"So instead of asking me..."
"You vanished."
Nico lowered his head.
"Yes."
Behind them, Iris watched both adults carefully.
Neither one looked like they were lying.
Which somehow made everything worse.
Dr. Nadia Okafor quietly entered the room carrying a sealed laboratory folder.
"I apologize for interrupting."
No one answered.
She cleared her throat.
"The hereditary antigen prompted us to notify the laboratory."
Cass immediately understood.
"The DNA test?"
Dr. Okafor nodded.
"It wasn't ordered to establish paternity."
She looked at Nico.
"It was ordered because certain inherited markers affect future transfusions."
She placed the sealed envelope on the bedside table.
"The laboratory completed an expanded analysis this morning."
Nobody moved.
Nobody reached for it.
Dr. Okafor finally spoke the sentence that seemed to remove all the air from the room.
"It confirms a 99.9998 percent probability that Mr. Ferrante is Iris's biological father."
Vera closed her eyes.
Fourteen years.
Fourteen birthdays.
Fourteen Christmas mornings.
Fourteen Father's Days spent pretending neither of them cared.
Reduced to one percentage.
99.9998.
Iris stared at the envelope.
Then at Nico.
"So..."
Her voice sounded strangely calm.
"You're my father."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
For a man whose words had settled million-dollar negotiations and ended gang wars...
Language abandoned him completely.
Finally...
"Yes."
One word.
Barely audible.
It somehow carried fourteen years of absence.
Iris looked down at the IV taped to her arm.
"I always wondered."
Vera immediately reached for her hand.
"Honey—"
"No."
She looked back at Nico.
"I imagined a hundred different men."
"A soldier."
"A scientist."
"A musician."
She smiled sadly.
"I never imagined someone whose bodyguards carry guns."
Cass looked away.
For the first time in years...
He felt embarrassed to be standing where he was.
Nico took one careful step closer.
"Iris..."
She interrupted him.
"What happened?"
Not today.
Not the accident.
"Fourteen years ago."
He answered honestly.
"I loved your mother."
"I know."
"I was told I would never have children."
"I know."
"I believed leaving would keep her alive."
"I know."
He blinked.
"You know?"
"My mother kept every letter you wrote."
Vera looked at her sharply.
"Iris..."
"I found them when I was eleven."
The room froze.
"You...read them?"
"I read all twenty-three."
Vera covered her face.
"I was waiting until you were older."
"I know."
Iris smiled gently at her mother.
"I'm not angry."
She turned back to Nico.
"I'm just trying to figure out whether you stopped loving us...
or whether you never knew there was an 'us.'"
May you like
Nico's answer came instantly.
"I never stopped loving your mother."
