Chapter 2 - The Empire Learns the Truth

Three hours later...
Every surveillance camera in St. Carmel Medical Center captured something no federal agency had managed in fifteen years.
Nico Ferrante crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Simply sitting outside Room 614 with both hands over his face.
Cass stood guard twenty feet away, ensuring nobody photographed him.
Inside the room, Vera stared through the glass.
"I've never seen him cry."
"He doesn't," Cass answered quietly.
"I've worked beside him twelve years."
"This is the first time."
Across the city...
News spread that Nico Ferrante had remained inside the hospital since dawn.
His captains assumed Santos had died.
Instead...
They discovered something stranger.
Their boss had canceled every meeting.
Every shipment.
Every negotiation.
One message reached every division.
"Everything waits."
People who had seen Nico negotiate under gunfire could hardly believe it.
Nothing had ever come before business.
Until now.
Late that afternoon...
Santos regained consciousness.
He smiled weakly.
"You look terrible."
Nico almost laughed.
"I've had better mornings."
"You kill the men who shot me?"
"They can wait."
Santos frowned.
"They can..."
Then he saw Nico's face.
"What happened?"
Nico sat beside the bed.
"I have a daughter."
Silence.
"You..."
"A fourteen-year-old daughter."
Santos stared.
"I thought the doctors..."
"So did I."
He looked toward Iris's room.
"So did everyone."
That evening...
Federal prosecutor Helen Brooks received an anonymous tip.
"Nico Ferrante remained in a public hospital all day."
She frowned.
"For what?"
The caller answered only three words.
"His teenage daughter."
Helen immediately ordered surveillance.

If Nico suddenly had family...
He suddenly had vulnerability.
