Chapter 3 - A Father Learns Fourteen Years Overnight

The following morning...

Iris requested only one visitor.

"Nico."

Vera hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I'll be outside."

The door closed.

For several seconds...

Neither spoke.

Finally Iris pointed toward the chair.

"You can sit."

He obeyed.

"I've been thinking."

"I imagine you have."

"You've missed five thousand one hundred ten days."

His chest tightened.

"I counted."

She smiled faintly.

"I did too."

He looked at her.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"I know."

"I don't even expect to be called Dad."

"I know."

She folded her hands.

"But if you're really staying..."

He leaned forward.

"I am."

"Then don't try to become fourteen years in one afternoon."

He blinked.

"What do you mean?"

"I already had one parent."

She smiled.

"I don't need another hero."

"I just need..."

She searched for the word.

"A father."

His eyes filled again.

"I can learn."

"I hope so."

Over the next week...

He learned.

He learned Iris hated tomatoes.

Loved astronomy.

Played cello.

Collected old maps.

Always read the last page of novels first.

Could solve algebra faster than most adults.

Preferred rainy afternoons.

Still slept with the stuffed fox Vera bought when she was three.

Every tiny fact felt priceless.

Because each one represented a year he never got back.
