Chapter 7 - The True Meaning of Wealth

One year later, the Montana estate was alive with life.

The trial had concluded two months prior. Victoria had been sentenced to twenty years in a maximum-security federal facility for child endangerment, corporate fraud, and embezzlement, with zero chance of early parole. The Harrington name had been cleared, the stolen foundation funds fully restored and redirected to actual orphanages and children’s shelters across the country.

It was a warm summer evening. The sun was dipping below the mountains, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold and purple.

Nathan sat on the porch, a cup of coffee in his hands, watching his children. Leo and Julian were running across the massive lawn, kicking a soccer ball and shouting with joy. Emma was sitting on a blanket nearby, painting a picture of the mountains, her hands covered in bright, messy colors. Her laughter echoed through the valley—loud, free, and unobstructed.

Thomas, who had moved with Nathan to manage the new estate, walked out onto the porch, placing a fresh tray of lemonade on the table. He looked out at the children, then down at Nathan.

"They look wonderful, sir," Thomas said softly.

"They are wonderful, Thomas," Nathan replied, his heart feeling fuller than it ever had when he was making billion-dollar deals in glass boardrooms.

Emma suddenly dropped her paintbrush, grabbed her canvas, and ran up the porch steps, her eyes shining with absolute happiness. "Dad! Look! I painted us!"

Nathan took the painting. It showed four stick figures standing in front of a big wooden house under a bright yellow sun. There were no basements. There were no shadows. Just them.

Nathan pulled Emma into his lap, wrapping his arms around her tightly as Leo and Julian ran up the steps to join them, piling into a massive family hug. Nathan looked up at the mountains, a profound sense of peace washing over him. He had spent his whole life building an empire, but looking at the smiles on his children's faces, he finally realized that this—their safety, their joy, their love—was the only true wealth he would ever need.
