Chapter 2 - The Face Behind the Mask

The leather riding crop clattered against the damp concrete floor, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the suffocating silence of the basement. Victoria’s face drained of color, her aristocratic features twisting from cruel authority to absolute panic. For a fraction of a second, she tried to pull the mask back on—the elegant, benevolent smile that had graced a hundred charity galas.

"Nathan... darling," she stammered, taking a step toward him, her hands trembling. "It’s... it’s not what it looks like. You don't understand. They were being completely unruly. I was just trying to discipline them. The schools these days, they don't teach structure—"

"Shut up," Nathan whispered. The voice didn't sound like his own. It was a low, lethal rumble that made the air in the room feel heavy.

He didn't look at his wife. He couldn't. If he looked at her for another second, the rage consuming his soul might turn into something uncontrollable. Instead, his eyes fell upon his children. Eight-year-old Leo was still wrapped around his six-year-old sister, Emma, while their ten-year-old brother, Julian, sat shivering in the corner, his knees pulled tightly to his chest. They weren't crying out loud anymore. They were staring at their father with a heartbreaking blend of hope and terror, as if expecting the nightmare to resume at any moment.

Nathan dropped his briefcase. He bypassed Victoria completely, treating her as if she were nothing but air, and fell to his knees in front of his children.

"Leo. Emma. Julian," Nathan said, his voice cracking as he reached out. The moment his hands touched Leo’s freezing shoulders, the boy flinched violently. It tore a piece out of Nathan’s heart. "It's me. It's Daddy. You're safe. I promise you, you are safe."

He gathered all three of them into his massive arms, pulling their small, shivering bodies against his chest. Emma buried her face into his neck, her tiny body shaking with delayed, silent sobs.

"Nathan, let's talk about this upstairs," Victoria pleaded, her voice growing sharper, desperate to regain control of the situation. "The staff... the public... if anyone sees them like this, they’ll misunderstand. I did this for our family! For our reputation!"

Nathan wrapped his long wool coat around the children, lifting Emma in one arm while holding Julian and Leo close to his sides. He finally turned his gaze to Victoria. His eyes were completely dead.

"If you come near them," Nathan said, each word dripping with ice, "I will ensure you never see the light of day again. Stay in this basement, Victoria. Because right now, it’s the safest place for you."

Without waiting for her reply, Nathan carried his children up the dark stairs, leaving his wife alone in the cold, smelling of bleach and broken illusions.
