Chapter 5 - The Darkest Hour

Despite the overwhelming victory in the courtroom, the atmosphere inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Jude’s Hospital was heavy with grief.
Harrison stood behind the glass partition, looking at the tiny incubator. Inside lay his newborn niece—a tiny girl weighing less than four pounds, covered in wires, tubes, and heart monitors. Her little chest rose and fell rhythmically under the command of a mechanical ventilator.
Julian sat on a stool beside the incubator, holding his daughter's miniature hand between two fingers, tears silently soaking his collar.
The doors to the ICU opened, and a nurse hurried over to Harrison. "Mr. Cole! Your sister is waking up from her coma!"
Harrison rushed down the hall to Clara’s room.
Clara was pale, her lips chapped, her eyes groggy as she slowly adjusted to the harsh fluorescent lights. As soon as she saw Harrison step through the door, her hand moved weakly across the white sheets.
"Harrison..." she choked out, her voice raspy. "My baby... is she... did she..."
Harrison sat on the edge of the bed and gently took his sister’s cold hand in his. "She's here, Clara. She's alive. Julian is with her right now."
Tears spilled from Clara’s eyes, soaking into her pillow. "Is she okay? Harrison... please tell me the truth."
Harrison looked into his sister's eyes, his heart aching with a deep, human sorrow he had refused to feel while fighting in the courtroom.
"She's fighting, Clara," Harrison admitted softly. "The fall caused a lack of oxygen. The doctors are doing everything they can, but her lungs are weak. We need a miracle."
Clara gripped Harrison's hand with surprising strength, her eyes flashing with a desperate, maternal fury. "Take me to her. Now."
"Clara, you've just had major surgery, you can't—"
"I don't care!" Clara sobbed, trying to sit up despite the agonizing pain in her core. "Take me to my daughter, Harrison! Please!"
Five minutes later, Harrison gently wheeled Clara into the NICU in a wheelchair, stopping beside the incubator where Julian was waiting.
Clara reached through the circular portholes of the incubator, pressing her hands against her daughter's tiny, warm skin.
"Hi, sweetie," Clara whispered through her tears, her voice trembling with unconditional love. "Mommy is here. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you... but I'm here now. You're strong, baby girl. You have the Cole blood in you. You don't give up."
Julian wrapped his arms around Clara’s shoulders, resting his head against hers as they both wept over their fragile child.
Harrison stood a few feet back, watching them. For the first time in weeks, the icy shield around his soul began to melt. He looked at the heart monitor connected to his niece.
Beep... beep... beep...
The heart rate, which had been dangerously low and irregular for two days, suddenly began to stabilize. The oxygen saturation numbers on the digital display began to climb—from 82%, to 88%, to 94%.
The attending physician walked over, looking at the monitors in absolute astonishment. "This... this is unbelievable. Her lung pressure is dropping. She's starting to breathe on her own!"

Clara looked up at Harrison, a tearful smile breaking through her exhaustion. "She heard us, Harrison. She knows we're here."
Harrison closed his eyes, leaning his back against the wall, and felt a single tear roll down his cheek. The war was over. And his family had survived.
