Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble

The silence that settled over the courthouse steps was heavier than a tombstone.

At the base of the grand white staircase, Clara Cole lay motionless. Her hands were still instinctively cupping her eight-month-pregnant belly, a protective gesture frozen in time. The pool of deep crimson spreading across the icy marble grew wider with every passing second, soaking into the delicate fabric of her yellow maternity dress.

Ten steps above her, Victoria Sterling stood paralyzed. Her manicured hands were still extended in the air—the exact position they were in when she delivered the violent shove. The smug, vicious expression that had painted Victoria’s face moments ago had completely dissolved, replaced by a ghost-white mask of sheer terror.

She hadn't realized who Clara was. She thought Clara was just another nameless mistress, another pathetic nobody trying to ruin her family's corporate dynasty. She had no idea she had just shoved the only sister of Harrison Cole.

"Call an ambulance!" a clerk screamed from the top landing.

"Someone stop the bleeding!" an attorney yelled, stripping off his suit jacket and scrambling down the steps.

Through the chaotic storm of shouting onlookers, sirens wailing in the distance, and flashing smartphone cameras, Harrison Cole walked down the stairs.

He didn't run. He didn't scream. He didn't lose his composure. His tailored charcoal suit didn't have a single wrinkle, and his dark eyes were unnaturally, terrifyingly calm. But those who knew Harrison—the high-stakes corporate attorney whose cross-examinations had bankrupted Fortune 500 CEOs and sent corrupt judges to federal prison—knew that this quietness was the prelude to absolute destruction.

Harrison dropped to his knees beside his sister. He gently pressed his fingers against her neck, feeling the weak, thready pulse beating beneath her cold skin.

"Harrison..." Clara murmured, her eyes fluttering open for a fraction of a second, filled with unimaginable pain and terror. "My baby... please..."

"I'm here, Clara," Harrison whispered, his voice smooth and steady, acting as an anchor in her dying consciousness. "You and the baby are going to live. I give you my word."

Clara’s eyes rolled back, and her body went limp as her mind surrendered to the dark.

The paramedics swarmed the scene seconds later, lifting Clara onto a gurney with frantic urgency. "She's hemorrhaging! We need to move NOW! St. Jude's Trauma Center, clear the bay!"

As the gurney was rushed toward the roaring ambulance, Harrison stood up slowly. He wiped a small smear of his sister's blood from his cufflink with a pristine white handkerchief, then turned around to face the top of the stairs.

Victoria Sterling was trying to slip away through the crowd, escorted by her father, Arthur Sterling—the billionaire chairman of Sterling Pharmaceutical. Arthur was desperately holding his phone to his ear, shouting at his legal team.

"Victoria," Harrison’s voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the chaos like a razor blade.

Victoria froze. Slowly, she turned her head toward him.

"You thought you were destroying an inconvenient obstacle today," Harrison said, stepping closer to the stairs, his eyes locked on hers with a lethal, predator-like focus. "You thought your father's political donations and your family's legal team would protect you from the consequences of your cruelty."

"Harrison, listen to me!" Arthur Sterling stepped in front of his daughter, trying to project power despite the cold sweat visible on his forehead. "This was a tragic accident! Victoria tripped! We will cover all medical expenses—"

"Save your breath, Arthur," Harrison interrupted quietly. "You have twenty-four hours to gather every lawyer, every corrupt official, and every asset your family possesses."

Harrison took one step up the stairs, looking down at Arthur and Victoria with an expression that made the billionaire step back in fear.

"Because starting tomorrow morning," Harrison continued softly, "I am going to strip away your wealth, your reputation, your freedom, and your name. I won't rest until every single person who contributed to my sister's pain is sitting in a cold cell."

Without waiting for a response, Harrison turned on his heel and walked toward his black town car, leaving the Sterlings trembling under the watchful eyes of dozens of filming bystanders.
