Chapter 2 - The Silent Vow

The waiting room outside Operating Room 4 at St. Jude’s Trauma Center smelled faintly of antiseptic and iron.

Harrison sat rigid in a hard plastic chair, his hands clasped under his chin. Beside him sat Julian Carter—Clara’s husband. Julian was staring blankly at the red "IN SURGERY" light, his face pale, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't hold a cup of water.

Julian wasn't a powerful lawyer or a ruthless businessman. He was a high school music teacher—a quiet, gentle man who worshipped Clara. And that gentleness was precisely why Victoria Sterling had felt so comfortable walking over them.

"It's my fault, Harrison," Julian sobbed, burying his face in his trembling hands. "Victoria came to our house last week. She threatened to make Clara's life a living hell if we didn't drop our lawsuit against her brother's company for the toxic spill in our neighborhood. I should have taken Clara away... I should have protected her..."

"Stop," Harrison said, his voice firm yet gentle as he placed a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder. "You didn't do this, Julian. Victoria Sterling did. Arthur Sterling did. The entire corrupt structure that built them did. And guilt is a luxury we cannot afford right now. We need resolve."

The heavy double doors of the operating wing swung open. A surgeon in blood-stained scrubs walked out, pulling down his mask. He looked exhausted, the lines on his face deeply etched.

Julian sprang from his chair. "Doctor! How are they? Please!"

"Your wife sustained severe abdominal trauma and a fractured pelvis from the fall," the surgeon said, choosing his words carefully. "We had to perform an emergency Cesarean section to save the child."

Harrison stood up, his heart pounding against his ribs, though his face remained unreadable. "And my sister? The baby?"

"Your sister lost a critical amount of blood, but we managed to stabilize her. She is currently in a medically induced coma in the ICU," the surgeon explained. "As for your daughter, Mr. Carter... she was born hypoxic. She was without sufficient oxygen for several minutes. She is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on full life support. The next forty-eight hours will determine if she suffers permanent brain damage... or if she survives at all."

Julian dropped to his knees, weeping uncontrollably onto the linoleum floor.

Harrison didn't cry. He closed his eyes for three long seconds, taking a deep, slow breath that burned in his lungs. When he opened his eyes again, all trace of human emotion had been locked away behind an impenetrable wall of ice.

He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number he hadn't called in five years.

"Harrison?" a deep, gravelly voice answered on the first ring. It was Marcus Vance, the managing partner of the most feared corporate intelligence firm in North America, and Harrison's former classmate at Harvard Law. "I saw the news. My God, Harrison... how is Clara?"

"She's in a coma. The baby is on life support," Harrison replied coldly.

Silence stretched across the line. Marcus knew what that tone meant.

"What do you need?" Marcus asked quietly.

"Everything," Harrison said. "I want full financial audits of Sterling Pharmaceutical, every offshore bank account tied to Arthur Sterling, every civil settlement Victoria Sterling has ever paid out to cover up her assaults, and every judge in this district who has taken a campaign contribution from their PAC."

"Harrison, that family is worth four billion dollars. They own half the city council," Marcus warned.

"Then by the time I'm finished," Harrison whispered, looking at his sister's dried blood on his suit cuff, "they won't even have enough money to pay for their own bail."
