Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The courtroom of Judge Jonathan Blake was packed to absolute capacity. Media outlets from across the country sat crammed into the wooden pews, while outside, hundreds of protesters held signs reading "JUSTICE FOR CLARA" and "LOCK UP VICTORIA STERLING."
Sitting at the defense table, Victoria Sterling looked like a shadow of her former self. Her designer dress looked wrinkled, her eyes were bloodshot, and her hands shook continuously. Her father sat behind her, looking ten years older, surrounded by his remaining attorneys.
At the prosecution table sat Harrison Cole. He wore a pristine dark suit, his posture perfectly erect, his expression completely unreadable. Beside him sat District Attorney Miller, who had been forced to hand over primary control of the case after Harrison publicly released evidence of Miller’s illegal campaign contributions from the Sterlings, triggering an ethics investigation that threatened Miller's own license.
"This court is now in session," Judge Blake announced, tapping his gavel. "We are here for the preliminary hearing in the State v. Victoria Sterling. Defendant is charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Manslaughter regarding an unborn child."
Victoria's chief defense lawyer, a high-priced attorney named Richard Sterling (no relation), stood up instantly.
"Your Honor! These charges are absurd!" Richard argued passionately. "My client is being targeted in a media witch hunt orchestrated by Mr. Cole! The incident on the courthouse steps was a tragic slip! There was no intent, no malice, and certainly no murder! We demand an immediate dismissal of all major charges!"
Judge Blake turned to Harrison. "Mr. Cole, the defense claims there is no evidence of intent. How do you respond?"
Harrison stood up smoothly. He walked over to the center of the courtroom, holding a small silver USB drive in his hand.
"Your Honor," Harrison spoke, his deep voice filling the courtroom with an authority that silenced every murmur in the room. "The defense claims Victoria Sterling accidentally lost her balance. They claim she did not know my sister, Clara Carter. They claim this was a tragic collision."
Harrison connected the USB drive to the courtroom's projection system.
"What the defense does not know," Harrison continued, "is that forty-eight hours before my sister was shoved down those stairs, Victoria Sterling hired a private investigator to track my sister's daily routine."
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Victoria turned dead pale.
On the large projector screens, text messages popped up.
VICTORIA STERLING: Is the pregnant bitch still going to the courthouse on Thursday for her deposition? INVESTIGATOR: Yes. She arrives at 9:00 AM using the front marble stairs. VICTORIA STERLING: Good. I'll make sure she never makes it to that witness stand. I'll make her drop that lawsuit one way or another.
"No..." Victoria whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "Where... where did you get those?!"
"These messages were retrieved from the server of the security firm you hired," Harrison said calmly, looking directly into Victoria's panicked eyes. "You didn't just push my sister, Victoria. You ambushed her. You calculated the angle, you waited for her to reach the top of the marble steps, and you used maximum force to ensure the fall would kill her baby and prevent her from testifying against your family."
"Lies! Those are altered!" Richard shouted, trying to salvage the defense, but his voice lacked conviction.
"And furthermore," Harrison added, clicking to the next slide, revealing high-definition security footage from the courthouse entrance that had previously been 'lost' by the corrupt courthouse security chief—until Harrison’s team discovered the chief’s offshore payments from Arthur Sterling.
The video played in crystal-clear quality. It showed Victoria walking up behind Clara, looking around to see if anyone was watching, deliberately setting her feet, and lunging forward with full weight, shoving Clara square in the back with both hands.
The footage showed Clara screaming, tumbling head over heels down twenty marble steps, smashing her abdomen against the edge of the stone before landing at the bottom in a pool of blood.
Several women in the gallery burst into tears. Even the hardened bailiffs turned away in disgust.
"Your Honor," Harrison said, his voice dropping to a whisper that sounded like a death sentence. "This was not an accident. This was a premeditated attempt to murder a mother and her unborn child."
Judge Blake slammed his gavel down so hard the wood nearly cracked.
"Bail is revoked!" Judge Blake roared, his eyes filled with fury as he glared at Victoria. "Officers, take the defendant into custody immediately! She will await trial in the county jail without bond!"
"Dad! DAD! HELP ME!" Victoria screamed as four police officers grabbed her arms, pulling her backward as she kicked and shrieked. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! DO YOU KNOW WHO MY FATHER IS?!"
Arthur Sterling tried to rush forward to reach his daughter, but federal agents stepped through the courtroom doors, blocking his path.
"Arthur Sterling," an FBI agent announced, displaying a warrant. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, obstruction of justice, and bribery of a public official. You have the right to remain silent."

As the handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists, he looked across the room at Harrison Cole.
Harrison didn't smile. He didn't gloat. He simply adjusted his tie, packed his documents into his leather briefcase, and walked out of the courtroom, stepping past the ruined empire of the people who had dared to touch his family.
