Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Mercer

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing at the Suffolk County Courthouse drew a crowd larger than any high-profile political trial in Boston’s history.

Reporters packed the wooden pews, while outside, hundreds of women held signs reading "WE STAND WITH NORA" and "END CORPORATE ABUSE."

Grant Mercer sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray suit that looked noticeably loose on him. His two weeks in custody had stripped away his polished, charming demeanor. His cheeks were hollow, his eyes sunken and dark. Beside him, Celeste looked equally defeated, wearing dark sunglasses to hide her exhaustion.

On the other side of the courtroom sat Nora Hayes.

She wore a tailored navy dress, her chestnut hair pulled back into a neat knot. She sat erect, confident, and completely calm, flanked by Evelyn Shaw and Arthur Vance.

"This court is now in session," Judge Margaret Higgins announced, tapping her wooden gavel. "We are here to consider bail and pretrial motions in the matter of the Commonwealth v. Grant Mercer."

Grant’s attorney stood up, putting on a show of passionate desperation. "Your Honor! My client is a respected philanthropist! A pillar of the community! He has suffered immense character assassination in the media! We ask for an immediate release on personal recognizance!"

Arthur Vance stood up slowly. "Your Honor, the Commonwealth submits new evidence."

Arthur walked to the podium and connected a flash drive to the courtroom monitor.

"We have retrieved voice recordings from Grant Mercer’s personal cell phone," Arthur revealed. "Recorded thirty minutes after he was arrested, while making a phone call from the holding cell to his wife, Celeste."

The courtroom went quiet as the audio played through the speakers.

GRANT'S VOICE: "Listen to me, Celeste! Use the secondary account in the Caymans! Pay off the head of the security team at Shawbridge to destroy the original video files! If that event girl tries to testify, make sure she never makes it to the courthouse!"

Gasps exploded across the gallery.

Judge Higgins’s face turned red with indignation. She slammed her gavel down repeatedly to restore order.

"Mr. Mercer!" Judge Higgins thundered, glaring down at the defense table. "Not only did you commit a violent act on camera, but you actively attempted to bribe witnesses and threatened a victim while in custody!"

Grant panicked, grabbing his lawyer’s arm. "Your Honor! That was just frustration! I didn't mean it!"

"Bail is DENIED!" Judge Higgins ruled, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. "The defendant will remain in custody at the South Bay Correction Facility until trial!"

Celeste burst into hysterical tears as two court officers grabbed Grant’s arms, pulling him out of his chair.

"Nora!" Grant screamed, turning toward the prosecution table as he was dragged away, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Nora, please! Talk to Evelyn! We can settle this! I'm sorry! I'M SORRY!"

Nora didn't flinch. She watched Grant Mercer get led away in chains, her expression serene and unbothered.

As the courtroom cleared, Evelyn placed a gentle hand on Nora’s shoulder. "How do you feel?"

Nora looked toward the sunlit windows of the courthouse. "I feel like I can finally breathe."
