Chapter 1 - The Shattered Façade

The silence inside the grand conservatory at the Shawbridge Foundation was so complete that the faint hum of the air filtration system sounded like a roaring engine.
Grant Mercer stood frozen, his arm still partially outstretched from where he had released Nora Hayes. His phone vibrated violently against his hip inside his bespoke tuxedo trousers. Once. Twice. Three times.
Across the table, Celeste Mercer’s face was drained of all color. She reached for her phone with trembling, manicured hands, tapping the screen desperately. "Grant... Grant, what is this? My private account... the trust fund transfer... it says Transaction Revoked by Primary Trustee."
"Silence, Celeste," Grant hissed under his breath, though his own composure was rapidly disintegrating. He glared at Evelyn Shaw, who stood like an icy statue in her tailored ivory suit. "Evelyn, whatever game you think you're playing with the board, you need to stop it right now. The Mercer family controls forty percent of the voting proxy for the Shawbridge Endowment. You can't just 'activate' a provision without a full board vote!"
Evelyn slowly lowered her black smartphone and slid it back into her quilted cream purse. Her dark eyes, cool and unforgiving, locked onto Grant.
"The Mercer family used to control forty percent of the proxy," Evelyn corrected softly, her voice carrying easily across the silent room where two hundred wealthy donors were openly staring. "That was contingent on the Master Governance Agreement signed by your late father twelve years ago. An agreement that explicitly states that any executive officer or board representative who engages in public misconduct, felony assault, or gross moral turpitude surrenders their proxy rights instantly to the Executive Director."
"Assault?!" Grant laughed, a sharp, nervous sound that cracked midway through. "Are you out of your mind?! I caught a clumsy staff member spilling water and stabilized her! Ask anyone here!"
"I don't need to ask anyone, Grant," Evelyn said smoothly. "The conservatory's ceiling archways are equipped with high-definition multi-angle security cameras installed for the auction items. Every second of you grabbing Miss Hayes, digging your thumb into her shoulder, threatening her, and holding her hostage on her knees has been recorded in 4K resolution with clear audio capture."
Nora, still shivering in her wet evening gown, slowly pushed herself up from the floor using the edge of the table. Her knees shook, but she refused to stay on the ground a second longer.
Evelyn immediately stepped forward, placing a warm, firm hand on Nora’s back, shielding her from Grant’s towering presence. "Nora, go to my private office behind the mezzanine. My assistant has a warm coat and a change of clothes waiting for you. A medical team is already on their way to examine your shoulder."
"Evelyn, please..." Nora began, her voice hoarse from shock. "The event... the donors..."
"The event is over for the Mercers," Evelyn declared, turning her head slightly toward the entrance.
Four heavy brass doors at the back of the conservatory swung open. Two uniformed officers from the Boston Police Department stepped through, accompanied by the foundation's chief head of security.
Grant’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "Are you insane?! You called the police on ME?! At my own charity gala?!"
"It isn't your charity gala anymore, Grant," Evelyn said, stepping aside as the police officers approached the table. "And as of three minutes ago, the district attorney’s office has been sent the unedited footage of what you just did to a foundation employee."
Celeste let out a shrill scream as one of the officers stepped up behind Grant. "Get your hands off my husband! Do you know who we are?! We own half of Beacon Hill!"
"Mr. Grant Mercer," the lead officer said in a flat, emotionless tone. "You are being detained under suspicion of felony third-degree assault and unlawful restraint. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Grant's wrists in front of two hundred of Boston's most elite socialites, smartphones flickered everywhere. Guests who had spent the last ten minutes pretending not to notice were now recording every second of Grant Mercer’s public disgrace.

Grant leaned toward Evelyn as he was led away, his face contorted in rage. "You ruined your own foundation tonight, Evelyn! You hear me?! I will pull every dime of funding! I will bankrupt you!"
Evelyn watched him go without blinking. "You can't pull funding from a bank account that no longer belongs to you, Grant. Enjoy your night in custody."
