Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the Mercer empire was fighting for its life.
In a high-rise office building overlooking the Charles River, Celeste Mercer sat surrounded by six top-tier defense attorneys and two crisis PR consultants. The air in the conference room was thick with tension and stale coffee.
"This is a disaster, Celeste!" the lead attorney, Richard Sterling, shouted, slamming a newspaper onto the glass table. The front page featured a crystal-clear freeze-frame of Grant holding Nora’s arm while she knelt in ice water, alongside the headline: THE MERCER MONSTER: BILLIONAIRE ARRESTED AT CHARITY GALA.
"Fix it!" Celeste screamed, her pristine hair messy, her eyes red from crying all night. "Pay off the girl! Give her a million dollars! Two million! Whatever it takes to make her sign a non-disclosure agreement and drop the charges!"
"It's not that simple," Sterling warned, dropping into a chair. "Nora Hayes isn't taking phone calls. She's being completely shielded by Evelyn Shaw and the most ruthless legal team in Massachusetts. Furthermore, the SEC just froze Mercer Capital’s liquidity accounts based on evidence Evelyn handed over at midnight."
"Then destroy Evelyn!" Celeste spat, her manicured nails digging into her leather chair. "Find dirt on her! Find dirt on that pathetic event coordinator! Nora Hayes worked as a temp—dig up her past, her family, her student loans! Frame her as a gold-digger who set Grant up!"
What Celeste didn't realize was that every word spoken inside that conference room was being monitored.
Three miles away, in a glass-walled conference room at Shawbridge headquarters, Nora sat beside Evelyn and Arthur Vance—Evelyn’s head legal counsel. A laptop on the table displayed a real-time financial tracker monitoring Mercer Capital’s remaining assets.
"They're going to come after your past, Nora," Arthur warned gently. "Celeste Mercer will try to smear your character in the press to make you look like an opportunist."
Nora took a deep breath. The fear she had felt the night before in the conservatory was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.
"Let them look," Nora said calmly. "My father was a high school history teacher who worked two jobs to pay for my college. I have twenty-four thousand dollars in student loans, a clean record, and every hour I worked at this foundation is documented on timecards. I have nothing to hide."
"Good," Evelyn smiled proudly. "Because we are about to file a civil lawsuit against Grant and Celeste Mercer for twenty-five million dollars for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and corporate intimidation."
"Twenty-five million?" Nora gasped.
"And every single cent of that money," Evelyn added, "will go directly into establishing the Nora Hayes Education Trust for underprivileged women across the state."
At that moment, the door opened, and a young paralegal walked in holding a legal envelope. "Mrs. Shaw, the grand jury has just returned an indictment."
Arthur opened the envelope and skimmed the document. A satisfied smile broke across his face.

"Grant Mercer isn't just facing misdemeanor assault," Arthur announced to the room. "The grand jury has indicted him on felony aggravated assault, witness tampering, and four counts of corporate wire fraud. He is facing up to fifteen years in state prison."
Nora closed her eyes, letting out a long, shaky breath. The man who had whispered in her ear that she was "just the hired help" was about to learn that the hired help was going to take everything he owned.
