. CHAPTER 6 — When the Chair Became Empty

The silence before Adam stood was the deepest silence the estate had ever held.

He placed both hands on the wheelchair arms. Vanessa froze, her eyes dropping to his legs as if they belonged to a ghost. Clara stepped back. Marcus stopped breathing. Even the quartet stared with bows suspended above strings.

Adam pushed himself upward.

Slowly.

Steadily.

The wheelchair creaked once, and then he was standing in the grass, taller than everyone remembered, shoulders squared beneath his beige suit. A gasp moved through the garden like wind through dry leaves.

Vanessa stumbled back. “You can walk?”

Adam buttoned his jacket with calm precision. “Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“I gave you a version of me that had nothing to offer but loyalty,” Adam said. “You showed me what you would do with it.”

Her mouth opened, then closed. For the first time all afternoon, she looked smaller than her diamonds.

Lydia grabbed Vanessa’s arm. “Don’t say anything else.”

But Vanessa was too angry to obey. “You humiliated me in front of everyone!”

Adam looked around the garden: the flowers, the cameras, the guests, the wedding arch built for a ceremony that would never happen.

“You humiliated yourself,” he said. “I only stopped protecting you from the evidence.”

Two security guards entered from the main path, not rushing, not touching anyone yet. Their presence alone changed the temperature of the party.

Marcus approached with a folder. “The prenuptial agreement was never signed. The merger discussions with Vale Holdings are terminated. The board has already received the files.”

Lydia’s face went white.

Vanessa whispered, “Adam, please.”

That word—please—arrived too late. It sounded nothing like love. It sounded like a locked door from the wrong side.

Adam turned to Clara.

May you like

“Are you all right?” he asked.

Clara wiped her eyes. “I am now, sir.”
