343 The Garden Everyone Wanted to See

The Hartwell estate looked like something built for a fairy tale: white roses climbing over iron arches, crystal glasses shining beneath the afternoon sun, and a string quartet playing softly beside the marble fountain. Reporters waited beyond the hedges, hoping to capture one perfect photograph of Adam Hartwell, the youngest billionaire in Boston, marrying Vanessa Vale, the woman everyone called his miracle bride.

Only Adam did not look like a miracle that day.

He sat in a black wheelchair at the end of the garden aisle, one leg hidden beneath a dark blanket, his beige wedding suit pressed perfectly across his broad shoulders. His face was calm, almost unreadable, but his eyes watched everything. He watched the guests whisper. He watched Vanessa laugh too loudly near the champagne table. He watched his future in-laws pretend sympathy while measuring the estate with greedy eyes.

Three weeks earlier, Adam had announced that a riding accident had left him with damaged bones and uncertain recovery. His doctors had refused to give a timeline. The media had cried tragedy. Investors had panicked. Friends had sent flowers.

Vanessa had sent one text: Does this change the wedding photos?

That was when Adam stopped answering quickly.

Now she crossed the lawn in a red satin gown instead of white, saying she wanted “a splash of color before the wedding.” The dress clung to her like confidence. Diamonds flashed on her throat. Her smile was bright, but it never reached her eyes.

Adam’s housekeeper, Clara, knelt quietly beside his chair and straightened the blanket over his legs. She was the only person there who knew his hands were not trembling from weakness. They were steady because he had already decided what this day would become.

Vanessa leaned down, her perfume sharp and expensive.

“Smile, Adam,” she whispered. “Everyone came to see the brave cripple.”

Clara’s fingers froze on the blanket.

Adam did not move.

Across the garden, hidden behind white orchids, three tiny cameras continued recording.
