. CHAPTER 5 — The Laugh That Filled the Lawn

At first, no one understood what was playing on the screen.
The garden speakers crackled. The projector showed Vanessa from ten seconds earlier, leaning over Adam’s wheelchair. Her voice came through clear, colder than ice.
“I’ll keep the name.”
Vanessa spun around.
Her smile vanished.
The screen continued, now showing her earlier comments: brave cripple, nurse before the honeymoon, the help doesn’t speak. Every cruel sentence returned to the garden in her own voice. Guests stared as if a curtain had been torn from a beautiful room to reveal rot in the walls.
Lydia rushed forward. “Turn that off!”
Marcus stepped into view. “No.”
Vanessa’s face flushed. “Adam, what is this?”
Adam did not answer immediately. He looked at Clara, still standing beside him with tears in her eyes. Then he looked at the people who had called themselves friends but had laughed because it was easier than defending a man they thought powerless.
“This,” Adam said, “is what truth sounds like when it stops begging to be believed.”
Vanessa tried to recover. She gave a shaky laugh. “Everyone knows I joke when I’m nervous. Right? This is wedding stress.”
No one laughed with her.
The screen shifted again. Emails appeared—not the full private documents, but enough highlighted lines to make the meaning impossible to deny. Lydia discussing trust access. Vanessa asking how soon medical incapacity could be established. A consultant explaining the process of removing Adam from active control if a spouse supported the petition.
The guests began whispering, but this time the whispers were not against Adam.
Vanessa stepped toward him. “You spied on me?”
Adam’s expression did not change.
May you like
“No,” he said. “I finally listened to you.”
Then he reached down and folded back the blanket.
