. CHAPTER 2 — The Woman in Red

Vanessa had not always been cruel in public. In the beginning, she had been careful. She arrived at charity galas with soft smiles and practiced humility. She touched Adam’s arm whenever cameras appeared. She told magazines she loved his “quiet soul,” though she had once admitted she hated quiet rooms.

Adam had believed her because he wanted to.

After his parents died, he had inherited companies, houses, money, and a silence so large it followed him from room to room. Vanessa entered that silence like music. She made him laugh. She taught him how to ignore the people who only wanted his name. For almost a year, Adam convinced himself that her sharp edges were just ambition, not cruelty.

Then the accident story changed everything.

The wheelchair was Adam’s idea, but the reason was not simple. A private investigator had found emails between Vanessa and her mother, Lydia Vale. They discussed the Hartwell trust, board votes, inheritance restrictions, and how quickly Vanessa could gain control if Adam became “too fragile to manage.” There was no smoking gun at first, only language polished enough to hide poison.

Adam needed the truth spoken where no lawyer could twist it.

So he created a stage.

He told everyone he insisted on attending the garden rehearsal party despite his pain. He allowed gossip to spread. He let Vanessa believe he was broken enough to endure anything.

By the time guests gathered under the rose arches, Vanessa had stopped pretending.

She circled his chair with a glass of champagne, laughing as if he were furniture placed in the wrong corner.

“Look at him,” she told two bridesmaids. “A month ago he was untouchable. Now he needs someone to tuck in his blanket.”

The bridesmaids laughed weakly, then noticed Adam’s face and went silent.

Clara stood behind him, pale with anger.

Adam looked up at Vanessa. “Are you finished?”

Vanessa bent close, her red lips almost touching his ear.

May you like

“Not yet,” she said. “I’m just getting started.”

The cameras kept recording.
