Chapter 5 - The War for Chicago

Twenty-four hours later.
The private jet touched down softly on the private tarmac of O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.
A fleet of five armored black Cadillacs was waiting on the rain-slicked asphalt, surrounded by dozens of armed Moretti security personnel in sharp charcoal suits.
Sarah stepped out of the aircraft holding Lena, while Luca walked beside her carrying Ash. The cool Chicago air felt familiar, carrying the scent of lake water, city rain, and high-stakes power—the world Sarah had fled three years ago.
They were driven directly to the Moretti Estate in Lake Forest.
When the massive iron gates opened and the limousine pulled up the long, tree-lined driveway, Sarah felt her breath hitch in her throat. The grand limestone mansion stood majestically against the evening sky, its high arched windows glowing with warm, golden light.
It was the place where her life had fallen apart. But as they stepped into the grand foyer, Sarah froze.
The house was completely transformed.
The old furnishings—the marble statues, the cold modern art that Vanessa had helped pick out years ago—were gone. In their place were warm hardwood floors, cozy plush sofas, colorful rugs, and a sprawling playroom visible off the main living room, filled with brand-new toys, books, and child-sized furniture.
On the main wall of the foyer hung a massive, beautiful oil painting: a portrait of Sarah holding the newborn twins, painted from a photograph Luca’s investigators had secretly taken months ago in West Virginia.
Sarah stood frozen in the center of the room, tears rising in her eyes. “Luca… what is this?”
Luca set Ash down gently on the rug. He walked over to Sarah, stopping right in front of her, his eyes vulnerable and raw.
“I spent three years stripping away every trace of the past from this house,” Luca whispered, reaching out to gently brush a dark curl away from her cheek. “I swore to myself that if God ever brought you back to me, you would never see a single wall that reminded you of that terrible night.”
Sarah looked around the warm, vibrant home, feeling the heavy burden of three years of sorrow slowly melt away from her shoulders.
Before she could speak, the double doors of the study burst open.
Marco walked in, his expression dark and tense. “Boss. Mikhail Volkov just initiated a hostile takeover of the Port 44 shipping terminal. He has forty armed men at the docks. He’s calling for a meeting. He says if you don't sign over the deed by midnight, he releases the old forged documents to the federal court to freeze all Moretti accounts.”
Luca’s expression transformed instantly into pure, lethal authority. “He thinks he has leverage because he tracked Sarah.”
“Luca, no,” Sarah panicked, reaching out to grab his sleeve. “Don't go out there! It’s a trap!”
Luca turned to her, his large hands coming up to frame her face gently, his thumb wiping a stray tear from her cheek.
“Three years ago, Sarah, I let evil people come into our home and destroy our family because I was blind,” Luca said softly, his voice filled with unbreakable conviction. “I will never let anyone threaten you or our children again. Tonight, I finish this war once and for all.”

He leaned down and kissed her forehead—a deep, tender kiss that sent a wave of electric warmth through her entire body.
“Wait for me,” Luca whispered against her skin. “I’m coming home to my wife.”
