Chapter 3 - Shadows in Gray Hollow

By afternoon, the rain had turned into a thick, misty fog that rolled off the West Virginia mountains, wrapping the small town of Gray Hollow in a blanket of gray silence.

Inside the small apartment above Pike’s Bakery, the air was warm with the scent of chamomile tea and cinnamon.

Luca had taken off his soaked coat and rolled up the sleeves of his dark dress shirt, revealing the intricate black tattoos that covered his forearms. He sat cross-legged on the small living room rug, patiently building a tall tower out of wooden blocks with Lena and Ash.

Sarah watched from the kitchen counter, leaning against the wooden frame.

It was surreal. The most feared businessman in the Midwest—a man who had survived assassination attempts and negotiated billion-dollar deals—was currently letting a three-year-old girl put a pink plastic hair clip into his dark, damp hair.

“Look, Mama!” Lena squealed, clapping her small hands. “The giant is pretty now!”

Luca gave a rare, genuine smile—a soft, blinding smile that Sarah hadn't seen in over three years. “I am very honored, little princess,” Luca said gently, bowing his head slightly so she could add another clip.

Ash sat quietly beside Luca, meticulously placing a square block on top of the tower. He didn't speak much, but his eyes never left his father.

“He doesn't talk to strangers,” Sarah said softly, walking over with two mugs of tea and setting them on the coffee table. “He hasn't said more than three words to anyone in town since he started talking.”

Luca looked up at Ash, his amber eyes filled with deep, protective awe. “He’s cautious. Just like you were when I first met you.”

Sarah sat down on the armchair across from them, clutching her warm mug. The initial shock of Luca’s arrival had settled into a heavy, complicated reality.

“You can’t stay here, Luca,” Sarah said quietly, looking down at her tea. “Gray Hollow is a small town. People talk. And… I’ve built a simple life here. The kids are safe.”

Luca’s smile faded. He looked at her, his expression turning deadly serious.

“They aren't safe, Sarah,” he said in a low voice meant only for her ears.

Sarah’s head snapped up. “What do you mean?”

“How do you think I found you?” Luca asked softly.

Sarah felt a sudden chill run down her spine. “I… I was careful. I never used my social security number. I paid cash for everything. I registered the apartment under my maiden name’s variation—”

“Two weeks ago,” Luca interrupted, leaning forward, “a black-market broker in Detroit tried to sell your location to Mikhail Volkov.”

Sarah dropped her tea mug onto the table, splashing warm liquid across the wooden surface. “The Russians?”

“Mikhail took over the Volkov syndicate after his father died last year,” Luca explained, his eyes burning with intense coldness. “He knows I’ve spent three years burning down his shipping routes looking for you. He realized that if he found you first, he could use you to force me to sign over the Chicago docks.”

Luca reached across the small space between them, his large, warm hand covering hers on the armrest. This time, Sarah didn't pull away.

“My head security officer intercepted the broker four days ago,” Luca said, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. “That’s how I got your address. But Mikhail’s men aren't far behind. My convoy is parked two miles outside town, blocking the main highway, but this town isn't secure.”

Sarah panicked, her eyes darting toward the kitchen where the twins were playing. “Oh God… I brought danger to my babies…”

“No,” Luca said firmly, standing up and pulling her up with him, holding both her hands in his strong grip. “You protected them for three years, Sarah. You were brilliant. But now, it’s my turn to protect all three of you.”

Before Sarah could respond, the sharp, shrill sound of Luca’s encrypted satellite phone broke the quiet room.

Luca pulled the phone from his pocket and pressed it to his ear. “Talk to me, Marco.”

The voice on the other end was frantic, cut through by the sound of heavy rain and engine roars. “Boss! We’ve got three armored SUVs breaking through the south ridge checkpoint! They bypassed the highway—they’re taking the old logging trail straight into Gray Hollow!”

Luca’s face went completely blank—a terrifying mask of pure predator instinct.

“How long?” Luca demanded.

“Five minutes, maximum! Mikhail is with them!”

Luca ended the call and looked at Sarah. “We leave. Right now.”
