Chapter 4 - The Escape from Gray Hollow

The quiet afternoon of Gray Hollow vanished into chaos.
Sarah moved with frantic motherly instinct, grabbing two small backpacks filled with the twins’ clothes and favorite toys. Luca swept Lena up into his left arm and grabbed Ash with his right, holding both children tightly against his broad chest as he ushered Sarah down the rear narrow stairs of the bakery building.
“Mr. Pike!” Sarah yelled as they burst into the back kitchen of the bakery.
The old baker looked up from his flour counter, blinking in surprise at the sight of Sarah, two children, and a massive man in a dark suit carrying a concealed firearm under his shoulder holster.
“Sarah? What’s going on?” Mr. Pike stammered.
“Take the basement storm door, Mr. Pike,” Luca ordered with authority that commanded instant obedience. “Lock it from the inside and don't come out for an hour. Go!”
The old man didn't argue. He grabbed his keys and ran toward the basement stairs.
Luca kicked open the rear kitchen door leading into the dark alleyway behind the shop. The misty rain stung Sarah’s face as they rushed out into the cold air.
A heavy black bulletproof Suburban was idling in the alley, its engine rumbling like a sleeping beast. Marco, Luca’s head of security—a scarred veteran with a sharp jaw—held the rear door open.
“Get in!” Marco shouted over the rain.
Luca buckled Lena and Ash into the reinforced child seats in the middle row, while Sarah slid into the seat beside them, holding their little hands tightly.
“Mama, is this a game?” Lena asked, her big amber eyes wide, though she wasn't crying. Ash sat quietly beside her, holding his teddy bear tightly against his chest, his eyes fixed on Luca.
“Yes, sweetie,” Sarah forced a smile, kissing Lena’s forehead while her heart pounded against her ribs like a sledgehammer. “It’s a game. We’re going on a ride with... with your father.”
Luca climbed into the front passenger seat, pulling a sleek black handgun from his holster and checking the magazine with a sharp clack.
“Drive, Marco. Take the north mountain pass,” Luca commanded.
The Suburban roared to life, tearing out of the alleyway just as three heavy dark vehicles burst into the main street of Gray Hollow, their tires screeching against the wet pavement.
Through the tinted rear window, Sarah watched in horror as armed men in heavy black tactical coats poured out of the SUVs, rushing toward the bakery apartment she had called home for three years.
“They’re going to destroy my home…” Sarah whispered, tears stinging her eyes.
Luca turned his head from the front seat, his amber eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unbreakable devotion.
“I’ll build you a hundred homes, Sarah,” Luca said, his voice deep and steady over the roar of the engine. “Every brick, every room, wherever you want. But today, I’m taking my family back.”
The Suburban accelerated up the winding, fog-drenched mountain road, leaving the quiet town of Gray Hollow behind in a cloud of rain and burning rubber.
As the car climbed higher into the Appalachian mountains, the fog grew thicker, hiding the vehicle from sight. In the backseat, the twins slowly drifted off to sleep, exhausted from the sudden movement.
Sarah looked down at her small, flour-dusted hands, then looked up at Luca’s reflection in the rearview mirror.

For three years, she had believed she was safe in her quiet isolation. But as she watched Luca’s watchful eyes scanning the mirrors, ready to tear down mountains to keep them safe, she realized a terrifying truth:
She wasn't just running from danger. She was falling back in love with the husband she thought she had lost forever.
