Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Legacy

The air in the narrow hallway suddenly grew ice-cold. Sarah stared at Luca, her jaw tightening as shock clashed with deep, protective skepticism.
“That’s a pathetic excuse, Luca,” Sarah spat out, turning her back on him to walk toward the living room. “Even for you. Blaming a twenty-one-year-old girl for your own infidelity? Vanessa was my sister!”
“Vanessa is a sociopath!” Luca growled, following her into the small room, his heavy steps vibrating through the wooden floorboards. He caught himself, lowering his tone immediately so as not to scare the twins in the next room. “Listen to me, Sarah. Please. Just look at the medical reports.”
He reached inside his soaked coat and pulled out a worn, thick leather document case. He opened it with trembling hands and placed three folded pages on the coffee table beside a plastic toy fire truck.
Sarah looked at the papers, refusing to touch them. “What is this?”
“Toxicology results from the night you disappeared,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper. “Conducted by St. Anthony’s Hospital six hours after you ran. The police found me unconscious in our master suite the next morning after a guest noticed you missing and called security.”
Sarah’s eyes flicked down to the top paper. Official hospital letterhead. Stamp of the Cook County Coroner’s Office.
“You were poisoned?” she whispered, her brow furrowing.
“Scopolamine and heavy liquid benzos,” Luca said, taking a step back to give her space as she slowly reached for the page. “Otherwise known as ‘Devil’s Breath.’ It causes total motor paralysis, extreme hallucinations, and memory loss while keeping the victim conscious enough to follow basic commands. Vanessa spiked my scotch during the party while you were resting upstairs.”
Sarah’s hands began to shake violently as her eyes scanned the medical terms on the paper: High concentration of anticholinergic toxins detected in blood serum… patient presented with severe confusion, inability to form voluntary consent, and near-fatal respiratory distress.
“Why… why would Vanessa do that?” Sarah gasped, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.
“Because she didn't want me,” Luca said, his amber eyes darkening with lethal hatred. “She wanted the Moretti estate. She was working with the Russian syndicate—the Volkov family. They knew that if you caught us together, you would leave me. And under our prenuptial agreement, if we divorced due to infidelity, fifty percent of the Moretti shipping assets—the very ports the Volkovs wanted to buy—would be tied up in civil litigation for years, freezing my operations.”
Sarah felt the room spin. The floor seemed to tilt beneath her barefoot soles.
For three long years, she had nursed a burning hatred for the man who had supposedly thrown her away for her younger sister. She had built her entire identity around being the abandoned, resilient victim of Luca’s cruelty.
“No…” Sarah stammered, shaking her head, backing away until her spine hit the bookshelf. “No, this is a trick. You forged this. You’re a powerful man, Luca! You buy judges! You buy doctors!”
“Look at page two!” Luca demanded softly, pointing to the second document. “That is Vanessa’s wire transfer history! The morning after you disappeared, three million dollars was transferred into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under her name—sent directly from Vladislav Volkov!”
Sarah stared at the paper. The dates matched. The names matched. Everything matched down to the exact hour she had fled Lake Forest.
“She sold you out, Sarah,” Luca whispered, stepping closer, his voice cracking with emotion. “She sold us out. She staged that scene in our bedroom knowing you were coming down to check on me. She arranged my body, pulled off her dress, and waited for you to push open that door.”
Sarah dropped the papers onto the table. Her hands flew to her mouth as tears finally broke through her defenses, spilling down her flour-dusted cheeks.
The image of her sister’s smug, innocent face played in her mind—the sister Sarah had raised after their parents died, the sister she had clothed, fed, and brought into her home.
Vanessa hadn't just betrayed her. She had engineered the destruction of Sarah’s entire world for money.
“Where is she?” Sarah choked out, looking up into Luca’s dark, shadowed eyes. “Where is Vanessa?”
Luca’s expression turned dangerously calm—the terrifying look of the Moretti family patriarch returning to his face for a single fraction of a second.
“She’s in a high-security psychiatric facility in Geneva,” Luca said coldly. “I made sure she will never see the sun again without a guard standing outside her door.”
Sarah sank onto the edge of the worn sofa, burying her face in her hands. The relief, horror, and overwhelming weight of three lost years crashed over her all at once.
Before she could speak, a small voice echoed from the doorway.
“Mama?”
Sarah quickly wiped her eyes and looked up. Ash was standing at the entrance of the living room, holding his worn velvet teddy bear. His dark amber eyes were fixed entirely on Luca.
Luca froze. He stopped breathing. Slowly, as if afraid the tiny boy would vanish like smoke, Luca dropped to his knees right there on the rug, sinking down to make himself smaller.
“Hi,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling so badly he could barely get the word out.
Ash didn't run. He walked forward slowly, his little shoes tapping against the floor, stopping two feet away from the dangerous titan of Chicago.
Ash reached out one small, chubby hand and touched the wet black fabric of Luca’s coat.
“You’re rain,” Ash said simply, his voice quiet and serious.
May you like
Luca let out a broken gasp, a tear finally escaping his eye and trailing down his stubbled cheek. He looked up at Sarah, his chest heaving with silent, agonizing joy.
“He has your eyes,” Sarah whispered softly, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. “They both do.”
