Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vances

With Richard Montgomery in federal custody awaiting trial, the Montgomery empire fell completely under the control of Clara and Lily. Clara took over as CEO, while Lily was appointed as the head of the company's new philanthropic division, dedicated to supporting underprivileged youth and orphans.
However, one threat still remained: Victoria and Julian Vance.
Outraged by their family name being dragged into the press and furious that David Vance had taken Clara’s side, Victoria launched a vicious smear campaign against Lily. She paid tabloid magazines to publish fake stories, claiming Lily was a trained con artist who had manipulated Clara into turning against her own family.
One afternoon, while Lily was leaving a charity building downtown, she was ambushed by a mob of aggressive reporters and paparazzi, provoked by Victoria's media leaks.
"Lily! Is it true you fabricated the DNA results?" "Did you plan this to steal the Montgomery fortune?" "Are you just a gold-digger?"
Microphones were shoved into Lily's face. The bright flashes blinded her, triggering a wave of panic. She backed away against a glass building, trembling, unable to breathe.
Suddenly, a tall figure stepped between Lily and the media mob.
It was David Vance.
"Back off!" David shouted, his powerful voice cutting through the noise. He wrapped a protective arm around Lily's shoulders, shielding her face from the cameras. "Push another camera in her face, and I will personally file harassment lawsuits against every single one of your networks!"
The paparazzi backed down in fear of the top attorney. David gently guided Lily into his waiting dark sedan, locking the doors behind them.
Inside the car, Lily was shaking, breathing heavily. "Thank you, David... I'm sorry, I just froze."
"Don't apologize," David said softly, handing her a bottle of water, his eyes filled with genuine care. "You shouldn't have to suffer because of my family's sickness."
Lily looked at David. Despite being a Vance, David was nothing like his mother or brother. He was kind, brave, and had risked his own career to help two sisters he barely knew. Over the past few weeks, working alongside him, Lily had felt a deep, unspoken warmth growing between them.
"Your mother won't stop until she destroys us, will she?" Lily whispered.
"She won't," David agreed, his jaw tightening. "Which is why we are going to finish this tonight."
That evening, Victoria Vance was holding an exclusive private gala at her oceanfront mansion in the Hamptons, trying to reassure high-society investors that the Vance empire was still untouched by the Montgomery scandal.
Middle-aged socialites and politicians gathered around Victoria as she bragged about her family's purity. "My son Julian had a narrow escape! That maid almost ruined our family line. Thank goodness we saw through her lies!"
"Is that so, Mother?"
The crowd parted as David stepped into the ballroom, holding a legal folder. Beside him walked Clara and Lily, looking stunning and powerful.
Victoria’s face turned red with anger. "David! How dare you bring those girls into my house! Get out before I call security!"
"Call them," David said calmly. "They can listen to the evidence I’m presenting to the Federal Trade Commission tomorrow morning."
Julian stepped forward, flustered. "David, what are you doing?! You're ruining our family!"
"No, Julian. You and Mother ruined this family long ago with your greed," David replied. He opened the folder and turned to the gathered guests. "For five years, Vance Shipping has been using offshore tax havens illegally managed through Richard Montgomery's dummy corporations. Mother was the one who authorized the offshore transfers."
Gasps echoed through the room.
Victoria turned pale. "You... you would turn against your own mother?!"
"You humiliated an innocent girl in front of hundreds of people because she dropped a drop of wine on your dress," David said, looking at Lily with deep affection before turning back to Victoria. "You proved that wealth without empathy is nothing but trash. I am resigning as chief counsel of Vance Shipping, and I am handing all audit records to the authorities."
Julian rushed forward to grab the files, but Clara stepped in front of him, blocking his path with a cold smirk. "Don't bother, Julian. The federal agents are already at the front gate."
Sirens echoed outside the mansion gates. Red and blue lights flashed through the high stained-glass windows of the grand ballroom.

Victoria collapsed into a chair, weeping in utter ruin, while Julian stood frozen, realizing his life of privilege was officially over.
Lily stood by David's side, watching the chaos unfold. For the first time in eighteen years, the heavy weight of fear and shame completely lifted from her heart. She wasn't an invisible maid anymore. She was free.
