Chapter 3 - The War Begins

Within twenty-four hours, news of the Montgomery family secret exploded across national media. Headlines dominated every news channel:
MONTGOMERY HEIRESS ABANDONS WEDDING: REVEALS LONG-LOST SISTER WAS WORKING AS FAMILY MAID. MONTGOMERY REAL ESTATE STOCK PLUMMETS 30% AMID KIDNAPPING AND FRAUD ALLEGATIONS.
Clara had completely cut ties with her parents. She moved Lily into her private luxury penthouse in downtown Manhattan—the only asset registered solely under Clara’s name that her father couldn't touch.
For the first few days, Lily felt completely overwhelmed. She went from living in a damp, tiny basement apartment to eating fresh meals prepared by private chefs. But despite the luxury, Lily felt an overwhelming sense of guilt.
"Clara... you gave up your marriage, your family, and your inheritance for me," Lily said quietly one evening as they sat on the balcony overlooking the city skyline. Lily was wearing a warm cashmere sweater Clara had bought her, but she looked fragile. "If I had just stayed quiet... if I hadn't dropped that locket..."
"Don't you ever say that," Clara interrupted firmly, grabbing Lily’s hands. "You saved me, Lily. I was about to marry a man who didn't love me, surrounded by parents who cared more about their image than human life. You brought me back to reality."
"But your father is powerful," Lily whispered. "He won't let this go. Yesterday, when I went outside, two men in dark suits were watching the building."
"Let them watch," Clara said, a dark flame lighting up her eyes. "My father thinks he holds all the cards because he controls Montgomery Real Estate. What he forgets is that for the last five years, I was the head of corporate strategy for the firm. I know where every body is buried."
Just then, Clara’s phone rang. It was an unknown number. She put it on speaker.
"Clara," her father’s cold, stern voice boomed through the speaker. "This circus has gone on long enough."
"What do you want, Richard?" Clara replied coldly.
"I am offering you one last chance," Richard said. "Come back home. Apologize to the Vance family. We will issue a public statement saying the maid was an imposter taking advantage of your childhood grief. I have already bought off the media outlets. If you do this, your inheritance remains intact."
"And what about Lily?" Clara asked, her voice dripping with venom.
"I have arranged for her to be placed on a flight to South America tonight," Richard said callously. "She will receive a monthly stipend of five thousand dollars to live comfortably, provided she never sets foot in North America again."
Lily gasped, covering her mouth.
Clara slammed her hand on the table. "You really are irredeemable, aren't you? Let me tell you how this is going to go, Richard. I'm not coming back. And tomorrow morning, I'm filing an official criminal complaint against you for child abandonment, kidnapping, and corporate fraud."
"You wouldn't dare," Richard growled. "You have no proof of anything!"
"I don't need proof for the police yet," Clara smiled darkly. "I just need the court of public opinion. And by the way... did you forget who my biological uncle was?"
Richard went silent on the line.
"Charles Sterling—the man you claimed was Lily's biological father," Clara said slowly. "He died ten years ago, but he left his entire estate to his sole legal heir. An estate that includes a forty percent controlling stake in Montgomery Real Estate. My legal team is filing a petition tomorrow morning to claim Lily's rightful share of your company."
"You... you wouldn't destroy your own family's company!" Richard stammered, his confident tone instantly evaporating into panic.
"You destroyed my sister eighteen years ago," Clara said coldly. "Now I’m coming for your empire."

Clara ended the call and looked at Lily, who was staring at her in awe.
"Are you ready, Lily-bug?" Clara asked, a confident, fierce smile on her face. "Tomorrow, we stop running. Tomorrow, we go to war."
