Chapter 4 - The Strike

The headquarters of Montgomery Real Estate was surrounded by dozens of reporters and news vans.
An emergency board meeting had been called by Richard Montgomery in a desperate attempt to stabilize the crashing company stock and reassure panicked investors. Richard walked into the top-floor boardroom, accompanied by his lawyers and Julian Vance, who was trying to salvage the broken business partnership.
"The media will lose interest in a week," Julian assured Richard as they took their seats at the long mahogany table. "Once we prove the girl has no legal standing, the board will vote to remove Clara from her executive position."
"Agreed," Richard grunted, taking his seat at the head of the table. "Let's start the meeting—"
The massive double doors of the boardroom burst open.
Every board member stood up in shock.
Clara walked into the room wearing a tailored white power suit, her head held high. But she wasn't alone. Walking right beside her was Lily, wearing an elegant charcoal-grey suit, her hair styled beautifully, looking every bit like the true Montgomery heiress she was.
Behind them stepped in David Vance—Julian’s older half-brother and the ruthless, brilliant attorney who was known as the most feared litigator in the corporate world.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard roared, standing up. "Clara, you have no right to be here! Security!"
"Sit down, Richard," David Vance said, his voice quiet yet carrying an undeniable authority. He laid a thick leather binder onto the center of the table. "I suggest you listen before you make a bigger fool of yourself."
Julian stared at his half-brother in pure shock and anger. "David?! What the hell are you doing here? Why are you representing them?"
"Unlike you and mother, Julian, I actually have a conscience," David replied smoothly, throwing a cold glance at his younger brother. "And more importantly, I represent the truth."
David opened the binder, pulling out a set of official DNA test results sealed by the Federal Medical Examiner.
"First of all," David declared, handing copies to every board member. "We conducted an expedited, court-ordered DNA test between Lily and Richard Montgomery."
Richard’s face drained of color. "What...?"
"You claimed eighteen years ago that Lily was not your child, using that lie to justify abandoning her," David said loudly. "The DNA results conclusively prove that Lily Montgomery is, in fact, ninety-nine-point-nine percent your biological daughter, Richard."
The entire board gasped. Whispers flooded the room.
"You lied," Clara said, stepping forward, staring down at her father. "You knew she was yours all along. You just couldn't handle the fact that she was born during a financial crisis, and you used the fire to eliminate a financial liability!"
"That's... that's a lie!" Richard stammered, sweating profusely through his silk shirt. "The tests are forged!"
"They are certified by the supreme court, Mr. Montgomery," David continued coldly. "Furthermore, under the late Charles Sterling's trust—which was created to protect his business assets—a mandatory audit was triggered upon the discovery of his rightful goddaughter, Lily. We discovered that for eighteen years, you have been embezzling funds from the Sterling Trust to cover up Montgomery Enterprise's debts."
The board members immediately stood up in an uproar.
"Embezzlement?!" "Richard, is this true?!" "The SEC will shut us down!"
Julian Vance slowly backed away from the table, realizing that the ship was sinking fast. "Richard... you told me the company finances were clean!"
"Julian, wait!" Richard pleaded, reaching out, but Julian ignored him, rushing toward the exit to save his own skin.
Clara stepped up to the head of the table, placing her hands firmly on the wood.
"As of thirty minutes ago," Clara announced, "Lily and I have officially merged our combined stock holdings. Together with the Sterling Trust, we now control fifty-one percent of Montgomery Real Estate."
She looked directly into her father's terrified eyes.
"Richard Montgomery, by vote of the majority shareholders... you are officially removed as CEO of this company. Effective immediately."
Two federal agents stepped into the boardroom from the hallway, holding an arrest warrant.
"Richard Montgomery," the lead agent said. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Richard's wrists, he looked at Lily, his face filled with regret and desperation. "Lily... my daughter... please tell them! Tell them it was a mistake!"
Lily looked at the man who had abandoned her to a life of pain, the man who had let her work as a maid in front of his wealthy friends.

She didn't shed a tear. She held her head high and spoke in a steady, firm voice:
"My name is Lily Montgomery. And you are no longer my father."
