Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

The grand wedding was officially over before it even began.
Within an hour, Clara had dragged Lily out of the St. Regis, forcing her mother, Eleanor, and her father, Richard Montgomery, into the private executive lounge on the top floor of the hotel. Julian Vance and his mother, Victoria, pushed their way into the room as well, demanding answers.
Lily sat nervously on a plush leather sofa, still wearing her stained maid's uniform. She clutched a glass of warm water that Clara had personally handed to her. Clara stood right beside her sister, acting like a protective shadow, glaring at her parents.
"Explain," Clara said, her voice dangerously calm. "Now."
Richard Montgomery, a powerful man whose word usually dictated local politics, looked visibly aged. He paced back and forth, refusing to meet Lily's eyes.
"Clara, you don't understand the circumstances," Eleanor began, her voice tight as she adjusted her diamond pearl necklace. "Eighteen years ago, the family was on the verge of total bankruptcy. The fire at the summer estate was a tragic accident—"
"A tragic accident?" Lily spoke up for the first time, her voice shaking but clear. "I was seven years old! The fire started in the kitchen. A man came into my room, pulled me out through the window, and put me in the back of a car. He took me to an orphanage three states away and told me my family didn't want me because I was a curse!"
Clara gasped, dropping to her knees beside Lily, holding her cold hands. "What?!"
"They gave the orphanage a fake name," Lily continued, tears dripping down her face. "I grew up moving from one foster home to another. I worked three jobs just to survive. I took this maid job at the hotel catering firm last week because I couldn't pay my rent! I spent eighteen years thinking my own family hated me!"
Clara turned on her parents, her eyes burning with pure rage. "You didn't just lose her. You disposed of her! Why?!"
Richard slammed his fist onto a marble table. "Because she wasn't mine!" he roared.
The room went dead silent.
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp and turned away, hiding her face.
Richard stared at Lily with deep-seated resentment. "Eighteen years ago, I discovered that Eleanor had an affair with my former business partner, Charles Sterling. Lily was not my biological daughter. She was the child of the man who tried to ruin my business!"
Lily felt as if she had been slapped all over again. Her breath caught in her throat.
"I couldn't stand looking at her!" Richard continued coldly, his aristocratic mask completely slipping. "Every time I looked at Lily, I saw the man who betrayed me! When the fire broke out at the estate, I saw my chance. I paid a driver to take her far away and drop her at an anonymous orphanage. I told the press she perished in the flames. It saved the family name from public humiliation, and it wiped out the stain on my legacy!"
"You monster..." Clara whispered, standing up slowly. "She was a seven-year-old child! She was my sister! You abandoned her to a life of poverty and suffering just to save your precious pride?!"
"It was business and survival!" Eleanor spoke up, defending her husband, though her voice lacked conviction. "Clara, think about your future! If the public finds out about this scandal, the Montgomery stock will plummet! The Vance family will call off the marriage!"
Victoria Vance stepped forward, her nose turned up in disgust. "They certainly will! My son is not marrying into a family built on lies, bastard children, and scandals! Look at this girl! She’s an uneducated, low-class maid! Imagine the press headlines tomorrow!"
Julian Vance, who had been quiet the whole time, looked at Clara with a cold, calculated expression. "Clara, your mother is right. We need to handle this quietly. Send the girl away. Give her a couple hundred thousand dollars to sign an non-disclosure agreement and disappear. We can still save the wedding next month."
Clara stared at Julian as if she were seeing him for the very first time. The charming, perfect billionaire she was supposed to marry was just as hollow and cruel as her parents.
"Send her away?" Clara laughed bitterly, tears running down her cheeks. "You want me to pay my sister to disappear again so you can save your reputation?"
"It's the practical thing to do, Clara!" Julian urged, taking a step toward her. "Think about the Vance-Montgomery merger!"
Clara looked at Julian, then at her parents, and finally down at Lily—the sister who had spent eighteen years living in darkness while Clara enjoyed a life of luxury built on a foundation of lies.
Clara reached up, unclasped the multi-million-dollar diamond wedding necklace from her neck, and threw it right at Julian's feet.
"The wedding is off," Clara said loudly.
"Clara! Are you insane?!" Eleanor shrieked.
"I am not marrying a coward," Clara declared, taking Lily's hand and pulling her up from the couch. "And I am no longer a Montgomery. Keep your money. Keep your stocks. Keep your fake legacy."

Clara looked into Lily's shocked eyes and smiled warmly, her voice full of absolute determination. "From today on, my sister and I are taking back everything you stole from us."
Without looking back, Clara led Lily out of the room, leaving behind four stunned billionaires and a storm that was about to destroy their world.
