Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

The trial of Adrian Vale and Vanessa Lock was the most publicized legal event of the decade. The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal analysts, and curious onlookers.

Adrian sat at the defense table, wearing a dark blue prison jumpsuit. He looked broken, gaunt, and terrified. His mother had been evicted from her mansion and was sitting in the back row, crying quietly. Vanessa sat next to him, her fake glamour stripped away, looking pale and disheveled without her high-end makeup and luxury wardrobe.

Their high-priced lawyers had abandoned them after Julian Cruz withdrew his financial backing and turned state's evidence. They were left with overworked public defenders who looked like they wanted to be anywhere else.

I sat in the front row of the gallery beside my father, wearing a sharp grey suit, posture straight, radiating absolute peace.

The prosecutor stood up, addressing the jury. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a case of a marriage gone wrong. This is a case of systematic abuse, attempted murder, and massive financial fraud perpetrated by two individuals who believed their wealth placed them above the law."

For three days, evidence was presented.

The defense tried to argue that I had exaggerated the claims, but then the prosecution played the encrypted audio recording from my diamond pendant.

The courtroom fell into a horrified silence as Adrian’s gasps and Vanessa’s cruel laughter filled the room.

“Again... She rolled her eyes at me... One hundred ninety-nine... Two hundred.”

Several jurors wiped tears from their eyes. The judge looked at Adrian with pure disgust.

Then came the final witness: Julian Cruz.

Taking the stand under a immunity plea deal, Julian testified in detail how Adrian and Vanessa had approached him three years ago, offering to use Vale Global to launder tens of millions of dollars in illegal funds in exchange for offshore kickbacks.

Adrian collapsed his head onto the table, sobbing hysterically. Vanessa began screaming at Julian, calling him a traitor, until the judge threatened to have her gagged.

When it was my turn to take the stand as the primary victim, I walked calmly to the witness box. I swore the oath and looked directly at the jury.

"Ms. Sterling," the prosecutor asked. "Why did you stay with Adrian Vale for so long despite the abuse?"

I took a deep breath, looking past the prosecutor and staring directly into Adrian's terrified eyes.

"Because I was taught that love required sacrifice," I said clearly, my voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "I thought if I endured his anger, if I proved my loyalty, he would remember the man he used to be. But I was wrong. A monster doesn't change because you love him. He only changes when you force him to face the consequences of his actions."

"And do you forgive him?" the prosecutor asked.

"No," I replied without hesitation. "Forgiveness is for people who regret their actions. Adrian only regrets getting caught. I don't want his apology. I want justice."

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in Texas legal history.

When the judge called the courtroom back to order, the foreperson stood up.

"On the charge of attempted murder: Guilty. On the charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon: Guilty. On twenty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and money laundering: Guilty."

Vanessa broke down into hyperventilating screams as she was handcuffed and immediately led away to face a twenty-year sentence in federal prison.

Adrian stood up, his body shaking violently, tears streaming down his face as the judge delivered his final sentence.

"Adrian Vale," the judge declared sternly. "You demonstrated an appalling level of cruelty and arrogance. You treated a human being—your own wife—with less dignity than an animal. I sentence you to forty-five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole for the first thirty years."

Thirty years. He was thirty-two. He would be an old, broken man before he ever saw the light of day.

As the guards grabbed Adrian to drag him away, he turned toward me, breaking away from the guards for a split second, collapsing to his knees near the railing.

"Evelyn! Please!" he sobbed, reaching his cuffed hands toward me, his face ugly with tears and terror. "Look at me! Please... just tell me you love me one last time! Please don't abandon me in the dark!"

I stood up slowly. I walked to the wooden railing, looking down at the man who had once tried to destroy my spirit, my body, and my life.

I didn't yell. I didn't insult him. I simply reached into my pocket, took out my gold wedding ring, and dropped it onto the floor right in front of his face.

"Goodbye, Adrian," I said softly.

The guards yanked him up and dragged him through the heavy metal doors, his desperate screams fading down the hallway until there was nothing left but absolute silence.
