Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's Trap

Eleanor Vale was a woman made of ice and old southern wealth. She had never accepted me as Adrian's wife, constantly reminding me that I came from "common blood" and wasn't worthy of bearing the Vale name. When Adrian beat me, she was the one who advised him to "keep his woman in line."
I was sitting in my new corner office at Evelyn Holdings when my secretary announced an unscheduled visitor.
The door swung open, and Eleanor strutted in, wearing a dark mink coat and diamonds that sparkled under the fluorescent lights. Her eyes burned with pure venom as she looked at me sitting in her son’s chair.
"You scheming, ungrateful little snake!" Eleanor hissed, slamming her designer handbag onto my desk. "How dare you do this to my son! How dare you ruin our family!"
I didn't stand up. I simply leaned back in my leather chair, taking a slow sip of my tea. "Good morning, Eleanor. You look tired. Jet lag?"
"Don't you play games with me, Evelyn!" she shrieked, her voice shaking with rage. "You set Adrian up! You provoked him! He told me everything from jail! You orchestrated that entire scene with Vanessa just to ruin him and steal his company!"
I let out a soft, melodious laugh. "Provoked him? Eleanor, your son struck me two hundred times with a leather whip while his mistress drank my champagne. Are you seriously defending a monster?"
"He is a Vale!" she declared proudly. "He built this empire! You were nothing before him! A nobody daughter of a failed accountant!"
"Your information is severely outdated," I said, tapping a key on my laptop. A monitor on the wall turned on, displaying Eleanor's personal offshore accounts in Switzerland. "Your son didn't build this company, Eleanor. He stole from investors, laundered money for criminals, and relied on your hidden trusts to cover his losses. And speaking of your trusts..."
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. "What have you done?"
"My father bought the private bank in Zurich that holds your family's estate funds three hours ago," I smiled, looking up at her. "As of right now, every penny of the Vale family trust is frozen pending an international money laundering investigation. You don't have a penny left to pay for Adrian's lawyers, or even for your flight back to London."
Eleanor staggered backward, clutching her chest. "You... you can't do this... That money has been in my family for three generations!"
"It was," I corrected her. "Now it belongs to the federal government as seized criminal assets—or what's left of it after my civil lawsuit against Adrian for attempted murder settles."
Eleanor's face transformed from rage to desperation. She dropped her aristocratic pride, rushing forward and collapsing onto her knees before my desk—the exact same position Adrian had forced me into four nights ago.
"Evelyn... please!" she sobbed, reaching out to touch my hands, but I pulled them away. "He's my only son! He'll die in prison! Please, drop the charges! I'll give you whatever you want! I'll publically apologize! I'll tell the press I was wrong about you! Just save my boy!"
I looked down at the woman who had spent three years tormenting me, who had told me I was worthless, who had turned a blind eye while her son battered my body.
"Do you remember what you told me two years ago when I came to you with bruises on my arms, Eleanor?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
Eleanor blinked through her tears, speechless.
"You told me that a real woman endures her husband's temper to keep the family together," I quoted softly. "You told me that pain builds character. So consider this, Eleanor: Adrian is just building character. And so are you."
I pressed the intercom button on my desk. "Security, please escort Mrs. Vale off the premises. If she sets foot in this building again, have her arrested for trespassing."
Two large security guards entered the office and grabbed Eleanor by her arms, dragging her out as she screamed curses and wept uncontrollably.
I leaned back, taking a deep breath. The Vale family was officially bankrupt. Their name was garbage. But as I looked at the news notifications popping up on my phone, a strange alert caught my attention.

A high-profile criminal attorney from Miami had just entered the Dallas Federal Detention Center to meet with Adrian Vale. His fees weren't being paid by Eleanor or Vale Global.
Someone else was funding Adrian's fight back. Someone far more dangerous than the Vales.
