Chapter 2 - The Lioness Awakens

The private wing of Dallas Memorial Hospital was locked down under high security. For three days, I lay in a luxury suite while top specialists treated the torn flesh on my back and ribs. The physical pain was excruciating, but the emotional fog that had clouded my mind for three years was completely gone.
My father sat by my bedside every day, working on his encrypted laptop, personally executing the financial destruction of the Vale family empire.
On the fourth morning, my assistant and long-time friend, Maya, walked into the room carrying a stack of legal documents and a hot cup of coffee.
"The news is going wild, Evelyn," Maya said, turning on the giant television mounted on the wall.
The headline on CNN read: VALE GLOBAL COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT: CEO ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.
On screen, video footage showed Adrian being dragged out of the federal courthouse in an orange jumpsuit, his hair wild, his hands shackled to his waist. Reporters swarmed him, thrusting microphones into his face.
"Mr. Vale! Is it true you tortured your wife?" "Is Vale Global bankrupt?" "Did you launder cartel money through Vanessa Lock’s shell companies?"
Adrian tried to hide his face, crying out for his lawyers, but no top legal firm in the country would take his case. Arthur Sterling had made sure that any attorney who dared defend Adrian Vale would find their own firm audited by the IRS within twenty-four hours.
"How is Vanessa holding up?" I asked, sipping my tea calmly.
Maya chuckled darkly. "She’s in the women's detention facility. Her family tried to bail her out, but your father bought out her family's real estate firm yesterday morning and called in all their bank loans. They’re broke, Evelyn. She can’t even afford a public defender."
"Good," I said, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. "Now it's time for step two."
"Step two?" Maya asked, eyes wide. "Evelyn, you've already ruined them! Adrian is facing thirty years in federal prison!"
"Thirty years isn't enough," I replied, standing up and looking at my reflection in the mirror. The bruises on my neck were turning dark purple, but my eyes were sharp, cold, and calculated. "Adrian took three years of my life. He isolated me from my friends, humiliated me in public, and treated me like trash. He didn't just hurt me; he used my silence to build his reputation. I want his name erased from history. I want the Vale family legacy reduced to dust."
My father walked into the room, holding a sleek black iPad. "The board of Vale Global is requesting an emergency meeting with the new majority shareholder. That's you, Evelyn. You now own sixty-two percent of the company."
"When is the meeting?" I asked.
"In two hours at the Vale Global headquarters," Dad smiled, a proud gleam in his eye. "Are you ready to show them who you really are?"
"I’ve been ready for three years, Dad."
Two hours later, a fleet of black sedans pulled up to the glittering glass skyscraper of Vale Global Enterprises in downtown Dallas. Employees stood outside in panic, watching as corporate assets were seized by federal agents.
I stepped out of the lead vehicle wearing a tailored white Alexander McQueen pantsuit, dark sunglasses, and high heels that clicked loudly against the pavement. My back was wrapped tightly in bandages, but I walked with absolute grace and power.
As I entered the top-floor boardroom, twelve elderly board members—men who had ignored my presence for years, men who had laughed at Adrian’s cruel jokes about me at company galas—stood up in shock.
"Evelyn?" the interim chairman stammered. "We... we didn't expect you..."
I walked straight to the head of the long mahogany table—the seat where Adrian used to sit—and pulled back the heavy leather chair. I sat down, resting my hands on the table, looking at each of them one by one.
"It's Ms. Sterling to you," I said smoothly. "And as the new controlling owner of this company, I have a few announcements."
The room went dead silent.
"First," I continued, "Vale Global Enterprises no longer exists. As of this moment, the company is being rebranded under the Sterling Umbrella as 'Evelyn Holdings.' Second, every board member who signed off on Adrian’s fraudulent transactions without asking questions is fired, effective immediately, and will face civil lawsuits for breach of fiduciary duty."
"You can't do this!" one old board member shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "You're just a trophy wife! You know nothing about running a corporation!"
I didn't lose my temper. I simply raised a finger, and my legal team handed every board member a thick dossier.
"In those files," I said coldly, "are the records of every bribe, every offshore account, and every tax evasion scheme each of you engaged in alongside Adrian over the last five years. You have ten minutes to sign your resignations and forfeit your stock options. If you sign, I let you walk away with your freedom. If you fight me... my father’s legal team will ensure you spend your retirement years sharing a cell block with my ex-husband."
The board member who had yelled looked at the document, his face turning pale. Slowly, trembling, he took out his pen and signed. One by one, every single man in the room followed suit.
Within fifteen minutes, the entire board was cleared out.

I stood at the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the Dallas skyline. I had reclaimed my name. I had taken his company. But I knew Adrian wasn't completely broken yet. He still had one final card to play—his wealthy, ruthless mother, Eleanor Vale, who had been hiding in London.
And she had just landed in Dallas.
