Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Syndicate

The man who hired Adrian's new legal team was Julian Cruz—a notorious billionaire hedge-fund manager with deep ties to international organized crime. Julian was the silent partner behind Vanessa’s fake consulting firm. Adrian hadn't just been laundering his own money; he had been laundering Julian's money.

And now that my father and I had seized Vale Global and frozen all accounts, fifty million dollars belonging to Julian Cruz was stuck in limbo.

That evening, I was staying at my father's heavily fortified estate in the outskirts of Dallas. The house was surrounded by security detail, but I couldn't sleep. The back injuries were healing, but the mental chess game was getting far more dangerous.

My father joined me on the balcony, handing me a glass of warm milk.

"Julian Cruz is making a move, Evelyn," Dad said seriously. "He filed an emergency motion in federal court claiming that twenty percent of Vale Global's assets belong to his firm. He's trying to force a liquidation of the company so he can retrieve his fifty million."

"If he liquidates the company, Adrian gets released on a legal loophole regarding seized evidence," I said, my brow furrowing. "Julian doesn't care about Adrian; he just wants his money, and he knows Adrian is the only one who has the encryption codes to unlock those specific accounts."

"Exactly," Dad nodded. "Julian is a predator. He thinks because you're young and recovering, he can intimidate you into a settlement."

"Has he tried to contact us?"

"He just sent an invitation," my father smiled darkly, holding up an encrypted phone. "He's hosting an exclusive charity gala at the Dallas Symphony Hall tomorrow night. He requested the honor of Evelyn Sterling's presence to 'discuss a mutually beneficial arrangement.'"

"He thinks I'm afraid to face him in public," I said, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across my lips. "He thinks I'm going to hide."

"Evelyn," Dad warned gently. "Julian is not Adrian. Adrian was a pathetic weakling playing at being a villain. Julian Cruz is a real monster. He has eliminated people who stood in his way before."

"Then he doesn't know who he's dealing with," I replied, standing tall. "He thinks he's dealing with Evelyn Vale, the victim. It's time he meets Evelyn Sterling, the heir to Sterling Capital."

The next evening, the Dallas Symphony Hall was filled with the city's elite, millionaires, politicians, and celebrities. The scandal involving Adrian Vale was the hot topic of every conversation.

When my fleet of black cars pulled up, the paparazzi erupted. Flashbulbs blinded the red carpet as I stepped out.

I wore a floor-length, deep emerald velvet dress. The back of the gown was completely open, deliberately exposing the long, fading red scars and bruises running down my spine. I didn't hide them with makeup. I wore them like armor.

Gasps echoed through the crowd as photographers caught sight of my back. Headlines were already being written: EVELYN STERLING WEARS HER SCARS TO THE FRONT ROW OF DALLAS SOCIETY.

Inside the grand ballroom, the crowd parted as I walked in. I spotted Julian Cruz standing by the VIP bar, sipping scotch. He was a handsome, middle-aged man with sharp eyes and a sinister charm.

As I approached him, he smiled and raised his glass. "Ah, the famous Evelyn Sterling. Or should I call you the Iron Lady of Dallas?"

"Evelyn is fine, Mr. Cruz," I said, accepting a glass of sparkling water from a waiter.

Julian's eyes wandered to my exposed back, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "A bold fashion choice. Showing the world your weakness?"

"Showing the world what happens to men who mistake my silence for weakness," I corrected smoothly. "I hear you're trying to sue my company for fifty million dollars."

Julian chuckled, stepping closer, lowering his voice so only I could hear. "It’s not a suit, my dear. It’s a demand. That money belongs to my associates. Adrian was merely the custodian. You took over the company, which means you took over his debt. Give me back my fifty million, and I'll let you destroy Adrian in peace. Refuse... and well, Dallas can be a very unsafe city for wealthy young heiresses."

It was a direct threat. A threat that would have terrified me six months ago.

I leaned in closer to him, looking directly into his cold eyes without flinching.

"Mr. Cruz," I whispered, "do you know why my father waited so long before stepping into my marriage?"

Julian frowned slightly, caught off guard by my composure.

"Because he wanted me to learn how to hunt on my own," I said, taking a small silver USB drive from my purse and slipping it into the front pocket of his tuxedo jacket.

"What is this?" Julian asked, his smile disappearing.

"That drive contains the complete ledger of every real estate property, offshore account, and shell company you've used to launder money through Latin America for the last decade," I whispered, my voice dripping with ice. "My private security team hacked your main server three hours ago while you were getting dressed for this party."

Julian's face went completely rigid. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," I smiled. "In exactly thirty minutes, those files will be automatically transmitted to the Department of Justice and the Interpol Financial Crimes Division. Unless..."

"Unless what?" Julian growled, his hand gripping his glass so tightly the glass cracked.

"Unless you withdraw your lawsuit against Evelyn Holdings, fire Adrian's legal team, and testify as a state witness against Adrian and Vanessa in court."

Julian stared at me in absolute shock. He realized in an instant that he wasn't dealing with a victim. He was trapped in a box built by a mastermind.

"You're a demon," Julian whispered.

"No, Mr. Cruz," I laughed softly, turning on my heel and letting him look at the scars on my back one last time. "I'm just a Sterling."
