Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

By 3:00 AM, the news of Isabella Rossi’s arrest had sent shockwaves through high society. Social media was erupting with leaked rumors, but inside the quiet sanctuary of the hospital's private recovery room, the world had slowed down.

Khloe lay on the elevated bed, her pale skin illuminated by the warm light of a bedside lamp. Her hand was firmly held in Marcus’s tight grip.

"The contractions have completely stopped," Arthur said gently, checking her IV line. "The baby is resting peacefully. You need to sleep now, Khloe."

"Thank you, Uncle Arthur," Khloe whispered, her voice still weak.

Arthur patted her head with fatherly affection. "Your mother would be so proud of how strong you are, sweetheart. Rest now. Marcus won't leave your side."

When Arthur left the room, the quiet returned. Marcus leaned down, pressing his lips against Khloe’s forehead, leaving them there for a long, quiet moment.

"I’m sorry," Marcus murmured, his voice thick with guilt. "I should have seen how dangerous she was. I should have protected you better."

"Marcus, look at me," Khloe said softly, lifting her free hand to touch his cheek. "You came into that room. You didn't believe her lies for a single second. You chose me."

"I will always choose you," Marcus promised, kissing her palm. "There is no Marcus Thorne without Khloe Thorne."

However, while peace had returned to the hospital room, a new storm was brewing in the dark corners of the city.

In a high-rise luxury apartment downtown, Julian Rossi sat in his darkened study, pouring his third glass of whiskey. His daughter was currently sitting in a holding cell at the central police precinct, denied bail due to the severity of the charges and the flight risk her wealth presented.

The doorbell rang sharply.

Julian opened the door to reveal a tall man wearing a dark trench coat, his eyes shadowed by the brim of a fedora. It was Dominic Vance—Arthur Vance’s estranged older brother and Khloe’s disgraced uncle who had been cast out of the Vance family legacy fifteen years ago for medical malpractice and embezzlement.

"You look terrible, Julian," Dominic said, stepping into the apartment without an invitation.

"What are you doing here, Dominic?" Julian sneered, shutting the door. "If you came to gloat about your brother Arthur's victory, you can leave."

"I didn't come to gloat," Dominic smiled dangerously, pouring himself a drink from the bar. "I came to offer you a way out. You want to save your daughter from doing ten years in a state penitentiary? You want to stop Marcus Thorne from destroying your company tomorrow morning?"

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Arthur thinks he's invulnerable because he holds the hospital board," Dominic said, leaning against the desk. "And Khloe thinks she’s secure because she married a billionaire. But they forgot one tiny detail. Khloe’s mother—my sister—left behind a secret trust before she died. A trust that contains a document that could invalidate Khloe’s entire inheritance, including her legal claim to the Vance medical fortune."

Julian leaned forward, interest sparking in his tired eyes. "What document?"

"A paternity record," Dominic whispered, a vile smile spreading across his lips. "Khloe isn't a Vance by blood. She was adopted quietly after my sister’s real child died at birth. Arthur forged the birth certificate to keep the family wealth intact."

Julian gasped. "If that gets out..."

"If that gets out," Dominic finished, "Khloe becomes a fraud overnight. The media will tear her to pieces. Marcus Thorne’s board will view her as a reputational liability, and Arthur Vance will lose his medical license and go to prison for fraud. My brother will be ruined, and your daughter will have the leverage she needs to strike a plea bargain."

"Do you have the original records?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with sudden hope.

May you like

"I know where they are kept," Dominic grinned. "In the safe inside Arthur's private estate. All I need is your money to hire the team to retrieve them tonight."

Julian’s desperate grin returned. "Consider it done."
