Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

Down in the high-risk OB-GYN emergency unit, the atmosphere was suffocating. Red digital numbers on the monitors flashed rhythmically while nurses moved frantically around Khloe’s bed.

Marcus stood in the corner, his hands stained with faint dust from the floor, his eyes glued to the fetal heart rate monitor. The steady thump-thump-thump of his unborn child's heart was the only thing keeping him from tearing the world apart with his bare hands.

Arthur stepped out from behind the curtain, pulling down his surgical mask. Exhaustion and fury were etched deeply into the lines of his face.

"How are they?" Marcus demanded, taking two steps forward.

"Khloe has severe bruising along her lower back and ribs from the impact against the marble table," Arthur explained, his tone measured. "The placenta suffered a minor marginal tear due to the blunt force trauma. Fortunately, the baby's heart rate is stable, but Khloe is experiencing premature contractions. We've administered medications to stop the labor, but she must remain on strict bed rest under continuous monitoring."

Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, resting his forehead against his hand. "Thank God..."

"Marcus," Arthur said, his tone turning deadly serious as he placed a heavy hand on his nephew-in-law's shoulder. "This was no slip and fall. The angle of the bruising on her side matches a direct blow—a kick. Someone deliberately tried to hurt her."

Marcus’s knuckles turned white as he slammed his fist into the adjacent wall. "Isabella."

"She thinks she’s protected because the Rossi family owns fifteen percent of this hospital's holding company," Arthur said, a grim smile touching his lips. "She thinks she can bribe the staff, manipulate the narrative, and claim self-defense. She doesn't know about the private security upgrade installed in the VIP wing last month."

Marcus looked up, his eyes darkening. "The cameras?"

"This hospital suite is used by foreign diplomats and high-profile executives," Arthur revealed quietly. "Every inch of that room, except the bathroom, is recorded in 4K resolution with high-fidelity directional microphones, backed up directly to an off-site cloud server that even the hospital board cannot touch."

Meanwhile, three floors above them, Isabella was pacing back and forth in the private VIP holding lounge. The fake fear was completely gone. She pulled out her encrypted smartphone and furiously dialed a number.

"Dad," Isabella hissed into the receiver the second the call connected. "We have a situation at St. Jude's."

"Isabella? What have you done now?" Julian Rossi's voice boomed over the speaker, tired and annoyed. "I told you to keep a low profile at the Thorne Charity Gala tonight!"

"That pathetic orphan Khloe staged a scene!" Isabella lied smoothly, her voice full of spite. "She cornered me in the VIP suite, started screaming at me, and threw herself onto the floor to make it look like I attacked her! Marcus is threatening to call the police, and her uncle Arthur is trying to lock me up!"

Julian fell silent for a moment. "Are there witnesses?"

"Only Elaine Parker, the event coordinator, but she came in after Khloe was already on the floor," Isabella said quickly. "Dad, you need to call the Chief of Police right now. Have them erase any incident reports and order the hospital to release me. If this leaks to the press, the Rossi stock prices will drop before the markets open!"

"I will handle the police chief," Julian grunted. "Stay in that room, keep your mouth shut, and do not say anything without our corporate lawyers present. I'm on my way."

Isabella hung up the phone and smoothed down her red dress, a triumphant smile spreading across her lips. Let Marcus try to fight us, she thought bitterly. In high society, truth is whatever the rich and powerful decide it is.

She had no idea that every single word of her phone call had just been intercepted and logged by Marcus Thorne’s private intelligence team.
