Chapter 3 - The Cloud Doesn't Lie

By midnight, the heavy rain outside St. Jude Medical Center had turned into a full-scale thunderstorm. Inside the hospital's executive conference room, the atmosphere was even colder.
Julian Rossi, a sharp-featured man in his late fifties wearing a thousand-dollar suit, sat at the head of the mahogany table. His daughter Isabella sat beside him, looking smug and confident with two high-powered defense attorneys standing behind her chair.
Opposite them sat Marcus Thorne. He had changed out of his ruined tuxedo into a simple black suit. His eyes were cold, dark, and utterly devoid of mercy. Beside him sat Arthur Vance and two officers from the City Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit.
"This entire meeting is an outrage," Julian Rossi declared, slamming a heavy hand on the table. "My daughter was invited to a charitable event, only to be verbally assaulted by Marcus's unhinged wife! To hold her here under armed guard is an illegal restraint of liberty!"
"Mr. Rossi," Officer Miller said calmly, opening a folder. "We are investigating an alleged felony assault resulting in medical complications for a pregnant woman."
"An allegation made by a woman who was visibly distraught and hysterical all evening!" Isabella interjected smoothly, laying her hands flat on the table. "Ask anyone at the gala! Khloe was glare-staring at me all night. She was jealous because Marcus and I used to be close. When I went upstairs to offer her a glass of water, she attacked me. I merely pushed her away in self-defense!"
One of the Rossi family lawyers stepped forward. "Furthermore, my client is prepared to file a counter-suit for defamation and emotional distress if these absurd accusations are not dropped immediately."
Marcus didn't flinch. He slowly leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, staring directly into Isabella's eyes until she uncomfortable adjusted her posture.
"You speak so well, Isabella," Marcus said softly, his voice dangerously smooth. "You've practiced that speech in front of your mirror, haven't you?"
"Marcus, please," Isabella sighed, feigning deep sorrow. "I know you're in shock. I know you want to protect your wife, but you have to accept the truth. She’s unstable."
"Let's look at the truth together, shall we?" Marcus said.
He picked up a sleek black tablet sitting on the table, pressed a single button, and tossed it into the center of the conference table.
The room’s massive 85-inch presentation screen flickered to life.
Isabella’s smile froze.
The screen displayed a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed timestamped 10:14 PM. The camera angle came from the upper corner of Suite 702, capturing the entire room in vibrant color and stunning clarity.
The audio played through the room’s surround sound speakers:
[On video: Khloe is sitting peacefully at the marble table, drinking water. The door opens, and Isabella steps inside, closing the door behind her.]
Julian Rossi’s jaw tightened. Isabella’s face drained of color.
[Audio from video: "You were never supposed to stand beside him," Isabella’s voice echoed sharply through the speakers. "You were supposed to smile for the cameras, give him the child he wanted… and disappear."]
[On video: Khloe tells her to leave. Isabella steps forward, her face contorting with rage. She forcefully shoves Khloe back. Khloe hits the marble table, a glass shattering. Then, as Khloe collapses to her knees, clutching her belly, Isabella raises her right leg and violently kicks Khloe directly in the ribs.]
"Turn it off! Turn it off right now!" Isabella shrieked, jumping out of her chair and trying to rush toward the screen.
Arthur Vance instantly stood up, blocking her path with an unyielding glare. "Sit down, Miss Rossi."
The video continued playing, showing Isabella checking her hair in the mirror, waiting ten cold seconds while Khloe lay writhing in agony, before putting on her fake hysterical face right as Marcus opened the door.
The silence in the conference room was suffocating.
Julian Rossi stared at the screen, his lips trembling, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. The two defense attorneys behind them slowly took a step back, exchanging terrified glances. They knew there was no legal defense in the world that could save their client from what was on that screen.
"That... that video is a deepfake!" Isabella gasped, her voice cracking as panic finally seized her chest. "It's AI! Marcus generated it to ruin me!"
Officer Miller stood up, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "The video has been authenticated by the cyber-forensics division, Miss Rossi. It came directly from an encrypted server with an unalterable time-stamp."
"Dad! Do something!" Isabella screamed, grabbing her father's arm. "Dad! Call the mayor! Call anyone!"
Julian slowly pulled his arm out of his daughter's grip. He looked at Marcus, his voice raspy. "Marcus... we can settle this quietly. Name your price. A financial settlement, stock options, public apologies—"
"I don't want your money, Julian," Marcus said, standing up and looking down at the broken Rossi empire. "I want your daughter behind bars. And as for your company... my team has spent the last two hours buying up every shorted share of Rossi Enterprises on the international markets. By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, your board will remove you as CEO."
May you like
"No!" Isabella screamed as Officer Miller grabbed her hands, pulling them behind her back and snapping the cuffs shut. "Marcus! You love me! You know you were supposed to marry me! She's nothing! She's just a nobody!"
"She is my wife," Marcus whispered coldly in her ear as she was dragged past him. "And she is the mother of the Thorne legacy. Enjoy your cell, Isabella."
