Chapter 1 - The Storm Behind the Glass

The silence inside the private VIP suite of St. Jude Medical Center was terrifying. Broken glass glittered under the soft chandelier lights, mirroring the shattered facade Isabella Rossi had spent months building.

Marcus Thorne took two long, heavy strides into the room. He didn't look at the crystal on the floor. He didn't look at event coordinator Elaine Parker, who stood gasping in the doorway. His entire world narrowed down to the sight of his wife, Khloe, clutching her swollen stomach on the cold marble, her knuckles white, her face drained of all color.

"Marcus!" Isabella cried out, her voice trembling with manufactured hysteria. She took a step toward him, her hand pressed against her chest as if she were the victim. "She lost her mind! I came up here just to check on her because I knew she was feeling overwhelmed by the gala. She started screaming that I was trying to steal you, and then she lunged at me! I tried to push her away to protect myself—"

"Silence," Marcus said.

His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, sub-zero chill that cut through Isabella's fake panic instantly.

Marcus dropped to his knees beside Khloe, gently sliding his arms beneath her back and knees. As he lifted her into his arms, Khloe let out a choked, ragged sob, her fingers digging desperately into the lapel of his tuxedo.

"The baby..." Khloe gasped, tears overflowing and spilling down her pale cheeks. "Marcus... the baby... please..."

"I've got you," Marcus whispered, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. "Hold on to me, Khloe. You're safe."

"Dr. Vance!" Elaine Parker shrieked into her walkie-talkie from the doorway. "Medical emergency in Suite 702! Obstetric trauma team needed immediately!"

Isabella’s eyes flickered with a brief flash of irritation before she forced tears back into her eyes. She moved closer, trying to place a comforting hand on Marcus's shoulder. "Marcus, let me help. I can call my family's private physicians—"

Marcus didn't just pull away; he turned his head and glared at Isabella with an intensity that made the socialite freeze in her tracks.

"If you take one more step toward my wife," Marcus rasped, his voice trembling with suppressed violence, "I will destroy everything your family owns before sunrise."

Before Isabella could offer another rehearsed lie, the double doors of the private wing slammed open.

A tall man in a tailored gray suit rushed into the room, flanked by four armed hospital security officers and a team of trauma nurses pushing an emergency gurney.

It was Dr. Arthur Vance—Chief of Surgery, member of the hospital's board of directors, and Khloe's maternal uncle.

"Get her onto the gurney! Carefully!" Arthur commanded, his authoritative voice echoing through the room. The medical team acted with lightning speed, securing Khloe and wheeling her down the private corridor toward the high-risk delivery unit.

Arthur didn't immediately follow them. Instead, he stopped in front of Isabella, his sharp gray eyes sweeping over her unruffled crimson gown, her pristine makeup, and the cold calculation lurking beneath her fake trembling stance.

"Dr. Vance," Isabella stammered, adjusting her voice to sound frail. "Thank goodness you're here. It was a tragic accident—Khloe lost her footing and—"

"I don't want to hear a single word from your mouth, Miss Rossi," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping into a stern tone that carried absolute authority. He turned to the head of security. "Lock down this room. Preserve every piece of broken glass. Do not allow Miss Rossi to leave this wing until the police arrive."

Isabella's breath hitched. "Police?! You can't detain me! Do you know who my father is?!"

"I know exactly who your father is," Arthur said coldly, leaning in close. "And by tomorrow morning, he will know that his daughter is facing charges for attempted murder and assault on an expectant mother."

Arthur turned on his heel and rushed down the hall after Marcus and Khloe, leaving Isabella standing among the shattered glass, her fake tears drying into a mask of pure, bitter venom.
