Chapter 2 - Shadows in the ICU

The hospital hallway smelled of antiseptic and lingering tension. The red illuminated sign of the Intensive Care Unit cast a harsh glow over Daniel as he paced back and forth like a caged predator.
Inside the operating room, a team of top obstetricians and trauma surgeons were fighting to save both Emily and the baby. The fall had caused partial placental abruption, and every second was a gamble between life and death.
Vanessa sat on one of the waiting room chairs, holding two cups of coffee she had purchased from the hospital cafeteria. She looked disheveled, perfectly acting the part of a traumatized friend who had witnessed a horrific tragedy.
"Daniel," she said gently, approaching him with a comforting smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You need to drink something. You haven't slept in six hours. The doctors are doing everything they can."
Daniel stopped pacing. He looked at the paper cup she offered, then slowly raised his eyes to meet hers.
"Why were you at the mansion today, Vanessa?" Daniel asked. His voice was steady, unnervingly calm. "You told me this morning you had court hearings until five."
Vanessa’s eyelid flickered for a fraction of a second, but she recovered smoothly. "I finished early. I was worried about Emily. I know how anxious she's been feeling about the nursery setup, so I wanted to surprise her and check in on her. I never imagined..." She trailed off, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
"How thoughtful," Daniel said softly. "And when you reached the top of the stairs, what did you talk about?"
"Nothing major," Vanessa lied smoothly. "Just the baby's arrival date. She seemed dizzy, Daniel. I told her to sit down, but she took a step backward and lost her footing. I reached out, but I missed her sleeve by an inch."
"An inch," Daniel repeated.
Just then, the heavy doors of the ICU swung open. Dr. Harrison, the lead surgeon, walked out, pulling down his surgical mask. Exhaustion was etched deep into his forehead.
Daniel rushed forward. "Doctor, how are they?"
"It was extremely touch and go," Dr. Harrison said, breathing a sigh of relief. "We managed to stabilize the bleeding and prevent premature labor. The baby's heart rate has stabilized, though we need to keep Emily in a medically induced coma for the next forty-eight hours to reduce swelling from her head injury and prevent uterine contractions."
Vanessa's hand twitched behind her back. A coma. That gave her forty-eight hours to figure out if Emily had managed to convey anything coherent to Daniel before passing out.
"Can I see her?" Daniel asked, his voice thick with emotion.
"Only for a few minutes," Dr. Harrison replied. "She needs absolute quiet."
As Daniel turned to walk toward the ICU room, Vanessa made to follow him. "I'll come with you—"
"No," Daniel cut her off firmly, turning around. The temperature in the hallway seemed to plummet. "I want to be alone with my wife, Vanessa. Go home. You've done enough today."
Vanessa stiffened. Something in the way he said "You've done enough" set off alarm bells deep inside her mind. She watched as Daniel entered the room and the heavy doors closed behind him.
Standing alone in the silent hospital corridor, Vanessa’s sympathetic demeanor evaporated completely. Her expression turned cold, calculating, and vicious. She pulled out her encrypted cell phone and walked swiftly toward the emergency exit stairwell.
She dialed a private number.
"It's me," Vanessa whispered harshly into the phone. "We have a problem. Emily survived the fall, and the baby is still alive."
"You said it would look like an accidental miscarriage," a harsh male voice replied on the other end of the line. "If she wakes up and speaks, the entire financial restructuring of the Carter estate falls apart. My investors won't wait, Vanessa."
"She’s in a coma for two days," Vanessa snapped, pacing the stairwell. "She won't be speaking to anyone. But Daniel is acting strangely. I need you to wipe the security servers at the mansion tonight. Every local drive, every network router. If there’s any footage of today, I want it burned."
"Consider it done," the voice replied before hanging up.
Vanessa leaned against the cold concrete wall of the stairwell, her chest heaving. She had worked for three years to get close to Daniel, to eliminate Emily from his life, and to secure control over the billions in the Carter foundation. She was not going to let a fragile, useless woman ruin her life’s ambition.

What Vanessa didn't realize was that Daniel wasn't sitting idly by Emily's bedside. In his hand, hidden beneath his jacket, was a tablet connected directly to an off-site satellite network.
The video footage from the top of the staircase was already loaded on his screen.
