Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Victory

Forty-eight hours passed.

To the outside world, the Carter family was in a state of utter collapse. News had leaked to the press that Emily Carter was in a coma following a tragic fall at home, and speculation was running wild across social media and financial news outlets.

Vanessa Reed was having the best week of her life.

She walked into the sleek, high-rise executive offices of Vance Global Holdings, her heels clicking authoritatively on the marble floor. She was escorted straight into the penthouse office of Julian Vance.

Julian, a sharp-featured man in his late fifties wearing a bespoke suit, poured two glasses of scotch and handed one to Vanessa.

"The server wipe went through without a hitch," Julian said, clinking his glass against hers. "Daniel’s internal IT team reported total data corruption on the mansion’s local storage. There is zero evidence."

Vanessa took a slow sip, a triumphant grin spreading across her face. "I told you I would handle it. Emily is still unconscious in the ICU. The doctors say even if she wakes up, the head trauma might cause severe memory loss. She’s useless."

"And Daniel?" Julian asked, leaning against his massive mahogany desk. "How is our grieving billionaire holding up?"

"He's broken," Vanessa sneered delightfully. "He hasn't left the hospital room in two days. He looks exhausted, defeated, and completely incapable of attending the emergency shareholder meeting tomorrow morning."

"Perfect," Julian chuckled, his eyes gleaming with greed. "With Daniel absent, I will execute the proxy vote clause. I’ll seize the board presidency of Carter Enterprises by noon tomorrow. And as promised, Vanessa, ten percent of the acquisition stock will be transferred to your Swiss account."

"A pleasure doing business with you, Julian," Vanessa smiled, drinking the rest of her scotch.

She spent the afternoon preparing her outfit for the upcoming shareholder meeting. She bought an expensive designer black dress—subtle, professional, yet signaling power. She practiced her speech in front of her mirror, perfecting her mournful tone for when she would announce to the press that, as head legal counsel, she would be stepping in to manage Daniel’s affairs during this "painful time."

That evening, Vanessa returned to the hospital to maintain her cover. She brought a bouquet of white lilies—a cynical, morbid gesture—and walked into Emily’s private room.

Daniel was sitting in the corner, staring out the rain-streaked window into the city lights. He looked disheveled, his suit unbuttoned, dark circles under his eyes.

"Daniel, honey," Vanessa said softly, placing the flowers on the table. "You look terrible. You really need to go home and rest. I can stay here with Emily tonight."

Daniel didn't turn around immediately. "The doctors are reducing her sedation tonight, Vanessa. They say she might wake up in a few hours."

Vanessa’s heart skipped a beat, a sudden wave of panic crashing through her chest, but she quickly forced a soothing smile. "That’s... that’s wonderful news! But Daniel, what if she doesn't remember things clearly? You shouldn't put too much pressure on her."

Daniel slowly turned his head to look at her. The exhaustion in his eyes was replaced by a look so piercing, so cold, that Vanessa felt an instinctual chill run down her spine.

"She remembers everything, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly.

Vanessa swallowed hard. "What do you mean? She hasn't spoken yet..."

"A mother never forgets the hand that tried to destroy her child," Daniel said. He stood up slowly, towering over her. "Tomorrow's shareholder meeting is at nine AM, isn't it?"

"Yes," Vanessa stammered, taking a small step back. "I... I was going to represent your interests so you wouldn't have to worry about Julian Vance’s takeover attempt..."

"Don't worry," Daniel smiled, a terrifying, empty smile. "I wouldn't miss tomorrow's meeting for the world. In fact, I have a special presentation prepared for the board."
