Chapter 3 - The Unseen Eye

In the dim light of the ICU, the soft, rhythmic hum of the life support machines was the only sound. Daniel sat beside Emily, holding her pale, cool hand between both of his.
On the tablet resting on his lap, the video was playing in silent, chilling detail.
The timestamp read 02:14 PM.
The camera angle was positioned perfectly above the archway, capturing the entire second-floor landing. The footage showed Emily walking out of the nursery holding a small plush bear. A few seconds later, Vanessa stepped into the frame behind her. There was no casual conversation. Vanessa’s expression on the video was terrifyingly focused.
The audio, amplified through Daniel’s earbuds, picked up every word.
"You think you've won, don't you, Emily?" Vanessa’s voice echoed sharply through the recording. "You think having his child makes you permanent?"
Emily had turned around, looking surprised and frightened. "Vanessa? How did you get in here? The front gate was locked."
"I have keys to everything Daniel owns," Vanessa spat, stepping closer, crowding Emily toward the edge of the stairs. "You’re an obstacle, Emily. You’ve always been an obstacle. Daniel belongs with someone who can handle his world, not a weak, pathetic charity case like you."
"Get away from me!" Emily had cried out, reaching for the handrail.
Then came the definitive moment. Vanessa grabbed Emily’s wrist, yanked her forward to break her balance, and forcefully slammed both palms against Emily’s shoulders, shoving her down the long flight of stairs.
The video showed Vanessa watching Emily tumble down the steps with cold, unblinking satisfaction. She waited at the top for ten agonizing seconds, calmly checking her nails, before whispering into the empty air: "Oops. You fell." Only then did she put on her fake hysterical face and run down the stairs right as Daniel opened the front door.
Daniel stared at the screen, his chest aching with a mixture of raw fury and sickening horror. The woman he had trusted as his family lawyer for half a decade was a monster who had attempted double murder in cold blood.
His phone buzzed softly in his pocket. It was a security alert notification from his private IT firm.
SYSTEM ALERT: Unlawful access attempt detected on Main House Network (IP: Redacted). Remote wipe protocol initiated by unauthorized user.
A cold smile touched Daniel's lips. He had anticipated this. He had purposely left the obvious local network vulnerable as a decoy.
He picked up his phone and called Marcus, his head of personal security and a former military intelligence officer.
"Marcus," Daniel said in a quiet, icy voice.
"I saw the alert, boss," Marcus responded immediately. "Someone just tried to hack the mansion’s hard drives from an offshore proxy. They think they just erased the footage."
"Let them think that," Daniel ordered. "They swallowed the bait. Have you tracked the origin of the remote access request?"
"Yes, sir. It routed through a private server owned by Julian Vance."
Daniel’s jaw tightened. Julian Vance was the head of Vance Global Holdings, Daniel’s primary rival in a multi-billion-dollar energy merger that was set to be finalized in less than a week. If Daniel’s family faced a catastrophic personal tragedy or scandal, Vance would automatically gain majority control of the board.
"So Vanessa isn't just acting out of jealousy," Daniel murmured, connecting the pieces of the grand puzzle. "She’s on Vance’s payroll."
"It appears so, Mr. Carter," Marcus confirmed. "What are your orders? Should I call the police and present the cloud backup now?"
Daniel looked down at Emily's motionless face, her breathing steady under the oxygen mask.
"No," Daniel said firmly. "If we hand this to the police now, Vance’s high-priced lawyers will find technicalities, post bail, and buy time to destroy evidence. They tried to kill my wife and my unborn child. A quick arrest is too merciful."

"What do you want to do, sir?"
"Let Vanessa think she succeeded in wiping the servers," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with dangerous intent. "Let her feel completely safe. I want you to trace every bank account, every offshore transaction, and every secret contract between Vanessa Reed and Julian Vance. We are going to ruin them publicly, financially, and legally—all at once."
