Chapter 5 - The Grand Unraveling

The grand auditorium of the Carter Enterprises corporate headquarters was packed to capacity.
Journalists, board members, major investors, and television camera crews filled every row. The atmosphere was charged with extreme tension. The stock prices for Carter Enterprises had been fluctuating wildly over the past forty-eight hours due to rumors of Daniel's personal crisis.
Julian Vance sat at the head of the executive stage, flanked by his legal team. Vanessa Reed sat right beside him, looking pristine, confident, and radiant.
Julian tapped his microphone, bringing the noisy room to an immediate order.
"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board," Julian announced with grand authority. "We are gathered here today under deeply unfortunate circumstances. As you all know, our Chairman, Daniel Carter, is currently facing a catastrophic family tragedy. Due to his inability to execute his corporate duties, I am exercising Clause 14-B of our merger agreement to assume temporary voting control over the board."
A murmur swept through the crowd. Investors whispered nervously among themselves.
Vanessa leaned forward toward her microphone. "As lead counsel for the Carter estate, I second this motion. It is in the best interest of the company that Daniel step back from his duties to focus on his... shattered personal life."
Before Julian could strike the gavel to finalize the motion, the double heavy doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a loud slam.
"I wouldn't strike that gavel just yet, Julian," a powerful, resonant voice echoed through the room.
Every head turned in shock.
Daniel Carter walked down the central aisle. He was dressed in a sharp, tailored three-piece charcoal suit. His posture was imposing, his step resolute, and his eyes burned with undisputed authority.
The room erupted into frantic murmurs and camera flashes.
Vanessa’s face went completely pale. "Daniel? What... what are you doing here? You should be at the hospital!"
"My place is right here, protecting what belongs to my family," Daniel said calmly as he walked onto the stage, taking a position at the primary podium. He didn't even glance at Julian, keeping his eyes locked onto Vanessa.
Julian slammed his hand on the table. "This is highly irregular! Daniel, you cannot simply interrupt a formal proxy vote without prior board filing!"
"I am the Chairman of this board, Julian," Daniel snapped, his voice thunderous. "And before any vote is taken, I have a mandatory compliance report regarding corporate sabotage and attempted murder that involves senior members on this very stage."
Gasps filled the auditorium. Reporters held up their phones, recording every second.
Vanessa’s hands began to shake violently under the table. "Daniel, you're distraught! You're suffering from extreme psychological strain because of Emily's accident—"
"It was no accident, Vanessa," Daniel interrupted, turning his gaze toward the large projection screen behind the stage. "And you know that better than anyone."
Daniel pulled a remote from his pocket and pressed a button.
The massive screen flickered to life. The high-definition 4K security footage from the mansion mansion landing beamed across the room, projected on a forty-foot screen for hundreds of investors and national news cameras to see.
The audio exploded through the auditorium speakers with terrifying clarity:
"You think having his child makes you permanent?" "Get away from me!" "You’re an obstacle, Emily... Oops. You fell."
The footage showed every brutal detail—Vanessa’s cruel words, the deliberate, forceful push, and her sickening, cold reaction as Emily plummeted down the stairs.
The auditorium descended into absolute chaos. Board members gasped in horror, journalists screamed questions, and investors stood up from their seats in outrage.
Vanessa sat frozen, her breath caught in her throat. Her blood ran completely ice-cold. "No... no! That’s impossible! The servers were wiped! That video doesn't exist!"
"You wiped the decoy server, Vanessa," Daniel said coldly into the microphone, his voice cutting through the uproar. "Every frame was uploaded in real-time to a secure satellite cloud network that you couldn't touch."
Daniel pressed the button again. The screen changed to display financial spreadsheets, bank statements, and wire transfers.
"And here," Daniel continued smoothly, "are the offshore accounts showing five million dollars transferred from Vance Global Holdings to Vanessa Reed's account in the Cayman Islands three days before the incident. A direct payment for corporate espionage and the physical elimination of my wife."
Julian Vance’s face turned gray. He looked at Vanessa, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, unable to articulate a single defense.
Before Vanessa could bolt from her seat, the side doors of the auditorium opened. Four uniformed police officers and federal agents marched straight onto the stage, handcuffs drawn.
"Vanessa Reed, Julian Vance," the lead federal agent declared loudly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate conspiracy, and grand fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
As the cold steel handcuffs clicked around Vanessa’s wrists, she looked at Daniel in total desperation, tears finally real, streaming down her ruined makeup. "Daniel, please! I did it for us! I loved you!"
Daniel looked at her with pure disdain, stepping closer so only she could hear his final words to her.

"You didn't love anyone, Vanessa. You loved power. And now, you're going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell thinking about the mistake you made under that camera."
Vanessa was dragged off the stage, screaming and sobbing, as dozens of camera flashes documented her complete and total downfall for the entire world to see.
