Chapter 1 - The Gathering of Shadows

The automatic doors of the hospital slid open, letting in a gust of freezing night air that did absolutely nothing to cool the raging inferno burning beneath Captain Jack Carter’s skin. He walked out into the parking lot, his boots hitting the pavement with measured, lethal precision. To the untrained eye, he looked completely calm—a soldier returning from the field. But to anyone who had served alongside him in the darkest corners of the world, Jack was currently a weapon with the safety switched off.

He climbed into his rugged, matte-black truck, the engine roaring to life like a caged beast. He didn't pull out onto the main highway immediately. Instead, he reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a burner phone, flipping it open with a practiced flick of his thumb.

He dialed a heavily encrypted twelve-digit number. The line didn't ring; it simply clicked as the voice encryption software verified his biometric frequency.

"Jack?" a gruff, alert voice answered on the second syllable. It was Master Sergeant Silas "Ghost" Vance, Jack’s secondary in command and the communications phantom of his elite Delta Force unit. "You're supposed to be on leave. Did the Pentagon pull the plug?"

"Tessa is in the ICU, Silas," Jack said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it could freeze water. "Thirty-one fractures. Severe blunt force trauma. The Graves family did it. Her father Harold and his seven sons. They cleaned the house with bleach and bribed the local police department to call it a robbery."

A heavy, dangerous silence hung over the encrypted line. Silas knew exactly who the Graves family was—a powerful, old-money clan that controlled the city’s shipping docks, local unions, and half the political landscape. They were often referred to in whispers as the 'Wolf Pack' due to their ruthless corporate hunting tactics. But Silas also knew Tessa. She was a brilliant artist who had defied her family's criminal underworld to marry a military man.

"What do you need, Captain?" Silas asked, the casual tone completely vanishing, replaced by the lethal readiness of a tier-one operator.

"I need a full tactical net established over the city," Jack ordered smoothly. "Tap into the local traffic grids, the precinct radio frequencies, and every personal device registered to the Graves estate. I want eyes on all eight of them. And Silas?"

"Sir?"

"Is the armory safehouse in the industrial district still operational?"

"Fully stocked and completely off the grid, Captain."

"Good. I'm going after the weakest link first. Ryan Graves. The youngest. I want his current GPS coordinates forwarded to my HUD within five minutes."

"On it, Boss. Welcome home."

Jack snapped the phone shut. Within three minutes, a sleek digital overlay appeared on his secure military tablet mounted to the dashboard. A blinking red dot illuminated the screen, moving through the downtown entertainment district. Ryan Graves was currently drinking at an exclusive, high-society underground lounge, completely unaware that his life expectancy had just plummeted to zero.
